Kevin Costner to star in Zack Snyder's Superman?
There are no specifics on which DC comics character Kevin Costner is being eyed to portray, and its not known if he will be a good guy or a villain. The role will be a key part of the new storyline that Zack Snyder has cooked up with Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.
Superman is scheduled to being shooting later this year, which means we'll start hearing various different actors confirmed for this superhero adventure in the very near future.
Man of Steel was released June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Richard Schiff. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

@ejk1 Wow thanks! Will definitely look into Green Lantern, and i'm a little interested in Captain America. He's supposed to be an Avenger right?
Thanks Ejk1.

@bruce-ha Well, from DC I recommend Green Lantern over the past five or six years. Start with Rebirth, then work your way through Sinestro Corp Wars and the Blackest Night saga. You won't be disappointed. Also, if you want something a little different, try R.E.B.E.L.S. It is really good, and needs to have as much support as it can get.
From Marvel, a different array of Avengers books have come out over the last year, including Secret Avengers and Avengers Academy, both of which I recommend. However, You may want to hold off and do some research into Marvel's huge, all-encompassing storyline called Fear Itself. It has been teased for months, and is supposedly the biggest game-changer in Marvel's history, which is saying a lot considering the Civil War, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign arcs.

@ejk1 Okey, will do. Do you know of any other comic book series that you would recommend, could be someone other than Batman or Superman?

@bruce-ha It may get confusing if I tried to answer with a simple yes or no, so I will just tell you to read it, and then if you want we can discuss Brainiac through the years.

@thebd Didn't know that, thanks.
@ejk1 Is brainiac in the Secret Origins series aswell?

@bruce-ha just to let u know, in the early years all of the smallville villains were pretty much made up or extremely bad representations of who they r in the comics. they've gotten alot better in more recent seasons but they r still slightly off for the most part. also in recent seasons they've had a single villain sort of be the villain for a whole season, each of those villains, Brainiac, Bizarro, Doomsday, Zod, Metallo (to an extant) and now Darkseid and a few other new gods (Desaad, Granny Goodness and i forget the last one) are all actual villains. in like the fourth season or something they had one episode with a bad guy named Mxyzptlk, that is an example of a very poorly represented character from the comic.
I may be wrong on this but Zod was created for the Superman movies and due to popularity was introduced to the comics, i think. i may be wrong but i'm fairly positive about that.
good movie villains aside from Luthor, in my opinion would be Metallo, Parasite, Doomsday at some point, Brainiac and Zod.

I wouldn't say over the top, but that is because in the comic book world, nothing should be considered over the top. But some are unique. Have fun reading, and pay attention to anything with Brainiac, because he should be involved either in the first film, or somewhere down the line.

@ejk1 Have to agree with you there, we all know of his origin story. Would be sad not to have it in the movie still, as you mentioned earlier would be cool to atleast have it in the opening credits.
One thing i do want to see is alot more variety in villains, i haven't read any comic books based on Superman yet (still awaiting my Secret Origins order) and from the movies i've learned of two main villains in the Superman universe... General Zod and Lex Luthor. I've followed Smallville quite a bit, but i'm not sure if some of those villains are mentioned in comic books or not.
You could say i'm one of those non-comic book readers you mentioned (the doors just opened up for me so i have alot of catching up to do), and i would love to see what other villains there are. One thing i've learned though is that as deeper we get into the different stories the weirder and over the top the villains get, am i right?

@bruce-ha I realize that not every Superman film has had an origin story, but when we combine the Reeves movies, the comics, Smallville, and Superman TAS, Ithink we have enough to go on. My point is that we shouldn't spend time going over things we already know by heart. I guess my measure for this comes through the non-comic book reader. I know many non comic book readers that can tell you the origins of Superman, simply from those sources. However, if you ask them about specific villains, characters, or events from the Superman comic, then they get all confused. Superman's origins are very well known, and I don't see a reason to once again go over them.

@thebd Interesting question. I believe Snyder would choose his own vision for what Krypton looks like but still stay true to what the fans would expect, and not make it too different.

@ejk1 That is a great idea, i liked the Intro of Incredible Hulk or even the Wolverine movie. For me the best part of the X-men Origins: Wolverine was the intro. A similar style for Superman would be great.
You're making it sound like every Superman movie has had an origin story though, if i recall the only Superman movie that showed krypton was the first one with Marlon Brando.

heres a question, if they do the origin stuff, should they maintain what is now consider to be the kryptonian look that pretty much all other forms of media have adopted as krypton since the other Superman movies? or should snyder make up his own version of krypton?

@bruce-ha They could do the same thing that the The Incredible Hulk did, and give the origin part in opening credits. One thing Superman does not need is an origin story, or a big chunk of the film being spent on his origins. We already know it, and don't need to waste vital time on seeing rehashed moments with different actors.

@ejk1 After reading your comments i kinda agree, but this is a new Superman movie right? Not a sequel to the previously released, so doesn't that mean that Snyder still has to pull off a mini-origin clip or couple of scenes showing the background of Superman/Clark Kent character? That in itself leads to Jor-El, so whether we want to see him or not, an origin side of this movie without Jor-El would be more hurtful to fans than seeing someone other than Marlon Brando as Jor-El.
Either way, now that i think of it, I'm leaning more towards Kevin Costner being casted for Jonathan Kent. Snyder did refer to Geoff Johns "Superman: Secret Origin" and emphasized on the part where a young Clark says to J. Kent that he want's to be his son. That alone makes me think either we'll see Jonathan Kent/Jor-El in the movie, one of these father roles will be it. I'm hoping for both.
Something I don't want is Kevin Costner as a villain.

Predictable route? Lex Luthor. Non-predictable route? Maybe Brainiac with tweaking? Costner is better then people give him credit for, he's just had a lot of sh*t roles in the past.

@ejk1 thank u, if snyder is truly trying to do something different i think including some of Superman's lesser known side characters like Turpin would make sense, and i think that Costner would make a good Turpin.

Not as Lex, Zod or Jor-El. Maybe as Jonathan or Perry. Not sure about bringing of Costner to join a Superman's movie. We'll see.

oh yeah he could play Lex Luthor also, if he does i hope LL isn't the main villain though. i'm fairly positive that Snyder said LL wouldn't be, but a cameo from Costner as LL would be cool

i could see him as Pa Kent or Perry White, not so much Jor-El. Maybe he could be Zod even, i mean he did a good job as a villain in Mr. Brooks, i think he could play Zod.
He could play general Lane also, there are a bunch of roles he could play, but Jor_El is not one of them. at least to me

@ejk1: Great points... and thanks for the info; I have added you to my list of comic book go-to-guys. Anyway, I am not very familiar with Superman mythos past what I've seen on screen, so I assumed that Jor-El was an important part of his origin. And I agree that the reboot should not follow the same path as the original.... with Nolan on board and with Snyder's vision, I doubt that they will, at least in formula, organize the reboot like Richard Donner's version of the man of steel. In fact, the more they differentiate from the original, the better as far as I'm concerned; it seems to be working for the Spidey reboot, at least from what we've seen or heard thus far.
