@k-man Well just like you said, "expectations". It's sad that the fun and hype that were able to build around movies now a days with the web is also hurting our experiences when we go to see these movies! I loved it and I desperately tried to keep my expectations low for it so that I can just go and enjoy it. J.J. "maybe" could have polished a couple things at the end but that was the style of the movie too, the old style look and feel.

And the driving force of the movie, the relationships between the characters all culminated fantastically with the last scene with the Silver locket!

Atleast you know that your expectations can effect your enjoyment of a movie, unlike many of the stubborn opinionated and singularly driven amateur critics we see on these sites everyday.

@k-man I can understand that. Aesthetically speaking, Abrams's style is one that seems to focus more on visuals than anything else. So, again, I can understand where you're coming from. I still think it's gonna be the best movie of the summer. I'll know for sure here in a few hours. But, either way, I think you're right. I don't see it as some great masterpiece. Terrific, yes. All-time great, probably not.

@narrator - Let me set the record straight about First Class. While I didn't HATE it.......I was incredibly disappointed by it......and I'm not talking about disappointed like I was the first time with Super 8, I'm talking "this wasn't at ALL what I was expecting", disappointed. Does that make sense?

Super 8 is a thousand times better than First Class......but the problems I have with Super 8 are so very small, especially in comparison to my problems with First Class.

I think it's awesome that you love First Class as much as you did! It really emphasizes just how different we all are and how a movie can impact people so differently. However, for me personally, X-Men FC couldn't even compare to X1 or X2........and I expected it to.

Super 8 was, for the first hour and a half, exactly what I was expecting.....but then a few things start happening where it loses it's magic a little bit......but its still a very good film! Plus, sometimes it takes a second viewing with lowered expectations to come away liking something more than you originally thought.

Who knows, maybe if I saw X-Men FC again, this time with my expectations six feet under, I might like it a hundred times more than I did before.....

Do you get where I am coming from?

@narrator @thedude-abides - Ok, so while I actually still stand by what I said earlier, for the most part anyway, I'm not quite as disappointed by this film the second time as I was the first (yes, I just saw it again......this time it was IMAX......because I wanted to support J.J. Abrams by actually paying for at least one screening).
For starters, WOW what a difference IMAX makes! This I already knew, but it's amazing just how much more you like something when the picture is 100 times sharper and clearer and the sound is blowing you out of your seat.
I also think that I enjoyed it more because I knew exactly what to expect this time going in and, therefore, my expectations weren't through the roof.

Now, that being said, I still have a few issues with this film......and without giving anything away for all you people who haven't seen the film, let me just say that my problems with this dont even start until about and hour and a half into the film. So, my problems are within the last act of the movie.......so keep you eyes open when you are watching it and we'll discuss this in a spoiler environment once we've all seen it.

Perhaps I was being too critical of the film the first time........that's what happens when you go in expecting a cinematic masterpiece.....but I still think that if J.J. had spent just a little more time polishing up the last act of the film then it would have been one step closer to being a classic.

Either way, very good film. I enjoyed the hell out of it (especially on my second run). I hope everyone has a good time with it! See it in IMAX!!!!!

  8. The Narrator: The Better Man

I believe the hype is exactly what's wrong with it. I know people who've seen the film with little to no authentic expectations, who were really blown away by the overall effect of a movie. They said it was a break from the average mainstream blockbusters swamping the screen, so I'll probably end up agreeing with that sentiment. Didn't watch the clip, but I'm still excited to see the film, as should you @skywise and @daveactor7.

@k-man, I'd be dampered by your stance on the film, as I often agree times agree with you, but you hated First Class, while I greatly enjoyed it (4.3 solid, for me) so I'm hoping this is once again a film on which we can disagree.

@k-man Though I haven't seen it yet, I already know I'm going to agree with you. It's going to be an above average movie at best. Still can't wait to see it.

I hope the monster doesn't turn out to be a giant c*ckroach or something. Or a spider looking monster like in cloverfield. I hope it's a cool looking horrific monster.

@gokussj4 - Unfortunately, it doesn't live up to the hype. I saw it last night at a special sneak screening and, while it is a good film....it isn't a GREAT film.

I went in with really high expectations and walked away quite disappointed. Again, while I liked the movie....there are a lot of problems with it and it definitely didn't deliver the instant classic I was both expecting and hoping for! That is the honest to God truth! So trust me when I say, if you are going in with high expectations.....you need to lower them a bit.

This video is actually in the movie.....kind of a silly "top secret" video, if you ask me. Could have been handled better, for sure.

Meh! Nothing special and really doesn't show anything we didn't know before. The more I see of this movie the more it looks like its nothing special........But that's the way it always is, the film never lives up to the trailer hype.
