Paramount Pictures decided to roll out its summer adventure Super 8 a day early, earning a cool $1 million in select theaters.

The movie, which stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, and Joel Courtney, opened in 324 theaters yesterday; screenings which were hosted by the social networking website Twitter.

Super 8 opened in 1,200 theaters for midnight shows last night, which earned an estimated $500,000. The movie is projected to open somewhere between $20 million and $30 million for its opening weekend, which falls in line with Paramount's expectations. Super 8 was made on a production budget of $50 million.

Super 8 centers on a small town in 1979, which is rocked when a train crash sets off mysterious events in and around the town. J.J. Abrams directed Super 8 from his own original screenplay, with Steven Spielberg executive producing.

Be sure to check back on Sunday for the full box office figures and to see how Super 8 fares this weekend.

Super 8 was released June 10th, 2011 and stars Joel Courtney, Jessica Tuck, Joel McKinnon Miller, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills, Riley Griffiths, Gabriel Basso, Kyle Chandler. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

I recently watched the movie "Super 8". I really really wanted to like this movie, but honestly it was a major let down. Once again, the trailer to the movie was a lot better then the movie itself. But what I did like about it was the nostalgia that it had, taking place in 1979. Story wise, it fell short. 2 1'2 stars out of 5.

@seawolf63 i agree... that was about the only concern i had, that it was too similar to the cloverfield creature... maybe that was intentional, but would not have been as intimadating had it looked any different. i think with aliens or creatures the more limbs you give them the more inferior they are to humans, so i understand that aspect of it.

this film so far has my pick of best movie of the year... of course the selection has been pretty bad so that is not saying much, but was a great movie. the story, the characters, it really did remind me of some of spielbergs earlier films, plus it went a different direction than many monster/alien films. abrams did a great job, and just another film to solidify him of becoming one of those great film makers that can tell great stories.

Super 8" was on of my most anticipated films for this summer. The trailer gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling that reminded me of the glory days of Spielberg's domination as a director and producer of so many classic films, from the release of "JAWS" to the mid 80's of "Gremlin's and "Goonies". Since I am no doubt one of the dinosaurs on this site, so old in fact that I fart dust, I was very fortunate to have seen those films on the big screen as they were released. I saw SUPER 8" on Thursday morning, and with all the hype following this film I will admit to being prepared for a major let down. While it wasn't quite what I wished for it to be, (let's face it, sensibilities change with age) I did enjoy it very much. The story was good and the actors, adult and child alike were spot on. J.J.Abrams has delivered an entertaining film, advertised in a very suave way. I also give it points for the nostalgia factor, although I was a bit older than those kids in 1979, I related with the odd and ends strewn about their rooms; from the assorted magazines (Famous Monsters Of Filmland), the model kits, posters, toys, etc. I even made super eight films back in the day, and yes, even a zombie film, because I was obsessed with NOTLD and the original "Dawn of the Dead", however, my friends and I dubbed our sound with a separate tape recorded. Overall the look and feel and tunes of the time felt about right. Finally, to deal with the biggest mystery of the film, the alien.... This is a ***SPOILER*** for those that have not seen it as yet. While I did not dislike the creature, I felt it was a close cousin to the "Cloverfield" brute. But I can imagine it is difficult to come up with anything totally original looking that still looks cool.... Anyway... I recommend this film.
