Studios on Track to Release Fewer DVDs in 2006
In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, DVD releases are looking to reach the 60,000 mark by years end. Studios, it seems, are slowing their release output in recognition of shrinking shelf space.
The story goes on to say "9.2% fewer DVDs (have) come to market than in the first half of 2005, according to preliminary estimates from the DVD Release Report. The Report pegs the number of first-half 2006 titles at 5,758, down from 6,392 in the first half of last year."
"Call it the 2005 product bulge," stated DVD Release Report editor Ralph Tribbey. "Call it maturity. Call it a creative response to space limitations."
