According to Variety, Stuart Beattie will rewrite Universal's vidgame adaptation Spy Hunter, which is to star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson with John Woo directing.

Beattie received story credit on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. As Disney did with its theme-park ride, Universal is seeking to craft a Spy Hunter film around a beloved pop culture icon that doesn't have much of a narrative component.

Beattie also penned the screenplay for last year's Tom Cruise-Michael Mann collaboration, Collateral. He also penned the upcoming Derailed, which stars Clive Owen, at Miramax.

Previously drafts of the "Spy" script were penned by writing teams Michael Brandt and Derek Haas as well as Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

Spy Hunter comes to theaters in 2012.
