Steven Spielberg to Remake Harvey
The film follows a man who strikes up a friendship with a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit. Jimmy Stewart played the man in the 1950 version of the film.
This movie will be a co-production between 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks. DreamWorks will put up 50% of the money via its new funding relationship with Reliance. The film will be distributed either domestically or internationally through its new deal with Disney.
Spielberg plans for production to start next year. He is looking to hire Tom Hanks or Will Smith for the title role.
The famed director has been wanting to make a new film for awhile and he opted to even do a project that was developed outside DreamWorks or Paramount. Spielberg had even been eyeing such projects as the Tony Kushner-scripted Lincoln and The 39 Clues.
Fox chairman Tom Rothman was the person who was able to bring Spielberg to Fox. He took Jonathan Trooper's Harvey script to the director. He and DreamWorks partner Stacey Snider "felt that while the source material is 65 years old, its themes are timely, uplifting and relatable."
Spielberg had also been circling the Paul Attanasio-scripted rewrite of Matt Helm, but ultimately there was some trepidation about how much that movie might cost. The director is attached to produce that project.

I can't picture either actor as Elwood. Jimmy Stewart was just too good. So was the nurse or sister or whomever she was that was driven crazy by the rabbit. ya know the one that freaked out upon seeing Harvey's portrait with Elwood? That girl. Hard to match her as well. But it still could work.

PLEASE if Spielberg has any heart left, NO Tom Hanks! Not only must the actor be mature so as to make the role more realistically funny, but must have the skill to convincingly engross you effortlessly, and Tom Hanks is a goofy non-talent that cannot even remotely do either to even satisfy those of yet-to- be school age!

I love the original and it is a classic, but i think Spielberg might be able to pull this off.
I actually played Elwood P Dowd in high school and as long as they stay close to the original play, it just might work.

LMAO, sorry Spielberg, you fail...
Do you actually believe you can make this better than the original with James Stewart, one of the best actors, Hollywood ever knew.
Didn't they learn the first time round, when they tried to remake this and it flopped big time,
what makes you think this won't swap?
Ohhhh what because it has
'A film by Steven 'Fail' Spielberg'
Also Hanks has been offereed, this role role before and declined, in which stating that 'NO ONE, can do a better job than Jimmy'
Which his right, Will Smith will do it just to pay the bills.
But this fails hard.
I agree with Fallen, Failberg, focus on Tintin, Chicago 7 & Lincoln
