Steven Spielberg and Will Smith to Redo Oldboy?

In a story from Variety, it looks like Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are looking to remake Chan Wook-park's Oldboy.

Speilberg's DreamWorks Studios is currently looking into the rights to the picture. If it happens then Universal Studios will be tapped as the distributor.

In the original film from 2003, a man is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years and his wife is brutally murdered. On his release, he is given a wallet full of money and a mobile phone. A stranger calls and asks him to try and figure out why he was imprisoned. A girl appears and promises to help him solve the enigma and seek vengeance for his cruel fate. As the search progresses, the man finally comes face to face with his kidnapper, who proposes a game: if the man discovers the reason for his imprisonment, his kidnapper will kill himself. If not, then the girl will be killed - but he has only five days to unravel the mystery.

    Are they really shooting for a PG-13 rating? Then that definitely changes the feel of the movie. And that would kinda suck. Since people would only remember Spielberg's version in the long run instead of the Chan Woo-Park version.

    WTF NOOOO, this is INSANITY!!!! Oldboy is one of the best movies EVER MADE, by one of the best directors out there, and with superb, 5 star acting. You don't touch something this perfect. It's like remaking a Stanley Kubrick movie, you just DON'T DO IT. PERIOD. God, someone organize a boycott to this crap!!!!

    Why are they remaking this only 6yrs later? Oh yeah, it was a foreign film. I've seen several clips of it already. It was a great story. I've heard loads about it. I suppose this could be a good idea. I'm just genuinely surprised that Spielberg wants to do this.

    While I like Spielberg and Will Smith well enough... man, they are NOT the kind of people you want to when remaking Oldboy. That movie was awesome but its ending is not the kind I see either Spielberg or Smith doing, and they are going to ruin it... And I hope I am wrong, I really do.

    Your comments on remakes are virtually useless!!!!! Remakes aren't bad! I'll grant, that some remakes are disappointing at times. But get the f*ck over it. There's always going to be remakes, and no matter what you have to say on the subject, the people in Hollywood are about as likely to listen to you as they would a drunken homeless person.

    As for the article, this sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if it'd be my kind of movie. Steven Spielberg and Will Smith, though. I'll need a trailer for this before I make any final decisions on seeing it.
