Apple founder Steve Jobs passes away at age 56.

Apple founder Steve Jobs passed away today at the age of 56. Here is the statement Apple released regarding Steve Jobs' passing.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today. Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

We reported in August that Steve Jobs stepped down as Apple CEO due to health concerns. Steve Jobs also served as CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, and was a part owner of Walt Disney Studios. Disney CEO/president Bob Iger released the following statement.

"Steve Jobs was a great friend as well as a trusted advisor. His legacy will extend far beyond the products he created or the businesses he built. It will be the millions of people he inspired, the lives he changed, and the culture he defined. Steve was such an 'original,' with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started. With his passing the world has lost a rare original, Disney has lost a member of our family, and I have lost a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Laurene and his children during this difficult time."

Steve Jobs' cause of death was due to pancreatic cancer which revealed itself in mid-2004.

@zanyzap -- Not very fond of the humor at such an early stage of his death. Regardless, what a great, inspirational man he was - R.I.P. Steve Jobs..

RIP to The Legend. Startling news, as this comes right after he stepped down from CEO for the second (or was it third?) time and stocks in Apple went down again, as they always do when Jobs retires. He was like the Kevin Flynn of Apple, Inc. The world will never be the same again. Bill Gates you better not say anything!

@dan1: Oh of course, I totally agree with you. Those 2 bonuses are and always will make it superior to microsoft. After all, it's Microsoft's problems which fried my last hard drive and annihilated all the stuff I had in my desktop folder--much of which I was still developing. Stories, script practice, interesting projects--GONE! It's all gone... ;(

@slysnide Hey, I'll take faster and hardly any viruses any day. Macs are also built like brick sh*thouses, work horses that don't quit. At least in my experience.

Being only 56, and having taken numerous extended leaves of absences from Apple, for him to suddenly resign told me it must've gotten really serious. As far as his products go, I've noticed a few things, such as cellphones were compartmentalized, internet capable, text message, photo sharing, etc long before the iPhone was invented, which simply applied the Apple "user friendly" format. Same with the iPad, which is essentially a clipboard version of a laptop with all the same capabilities of a Microsoft laptop, save for some of Apple's unique programs which not everyone uses. Then there's the whole "user friendly" debacle. Having just switched to Mac after being a hardcore Microsoft PC person for 12yrs, then I gotta say that Mac's bonuses are only that it's faster, and never gets viruses. All programs and websites still perform to their same potential as they do on Microsoft PCs, and if you're not into iTunes, iMovie, iPhoto, Garage Band, or Photo Booth which are the major free programs of an iMac (which are mostly used by young people), then it's not too different from a PC as many claim. Microsoft even made the first iPod if you will, but Apple modified those quirks with their own insanely popular model afterwards which pretty much inspired Microsoft to end its musical endeavors. So each thing seems to be an extension of something that already existed. The truly unique thing is that two great visionaries were developing the same thing at the same time without working together: Gates & Jobs. Except when Xerox developed user friendly technology and invited techies to visit and share in their developments, Jobs was under the impression that they didn't know what they had, when in reality the purpose of inviting the techies in the first place was to showcase the possibilities of the future, and Jobs ran with it before Xerox knew what hit them. Gates on the other hand did it himself. Granted Xerox was the tool to their own demise in the computer race, it was once again an example of Jobs amplifying what was already there, taking the next step if you will. And while I use a Mac, I don't find it that different from Microsoft besides being faster, and devoid of viruses which truly are the only two major superior aspects that Mac's got on Microsoft. Rest in Peace all the same Steve Jobs. You still contributed greatly to the industry.

Do not grieve at the passing of mortality, for life's but a thing of terrible gravity. And the planets gravitate around you, and the stars shall dance about you, and the angels in heaven adore you, and the saints all stand and applaud you.

I would have thought that someone as rich as him could afford some sort of experimental treatment for that sort of thing. I guess not even rich people are immune to death. Or.. At least invest in cryogenics and freeze himself until he can be revived in a time period where he can be treated.

"''We have lost a true visionary. Steve Jobs changed the face of computing and defined the shape of mobile computing devices. He had created an unparalleled example of what innovation can do. It saddens me to think of how much more he had to offer the world. He will be missed deeply.''"

George Lucas, chairman of Lucasfilm Ltd.

Just think George, without Jobs, you would've never been able to re-master star wars or add CGI effects to your Prequel trilogy :P

And a quote from the great Steven Spielberg himself:
