"I just think it's time," Steve told our Kristina Guerrero. "I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go."
But according to Steve, The Office could go on without him.
"It doesn't certainly mean the end of the show. I think it's just a dynamic change to the show, which could be a good thing, actually. Add some new life and some new energy to the show. I see it as a positive in general for the show."
A positive that Michael Scott could be leaving Dunder Mifflin for good? Stay tuned...

@InsertUsnernameHere: Good point.
But I also agree that his quirkiness drives the show, just as much as Dwight's quirks and agendas all stem to benefit Michael Scott. With him gone, Dwight's quirks would fall by the wayside, and the character would be lost without him. And after what'll be 7 seasons, the jokes on Dwight by Pam & Jim, Michael's idiocy, Andy's alienation tactics, and Jim & Pam's relationship which has now eclipsed makes all good reasons to end the show.
However, side characters like Oscar, Kevin, Creed, Meredith, Kelly, Phillis, and Toby could command a series with a directionless Dwight as the village idiot, seeing as those side characters rarely get whole shows centered around them.

It's usually best when a main, "leading" character leaves a show to end it on a strong note rather than milk it. Case in point: Scrubs when Zack Braff "left," and Spin City when Michael J. Fox left.

They should just let ricky gervais take over...jk. They should def end it after 7. I wonder if he maybe doing this to try and get nbc to pay him more money.

SCREENWRITER
Nope. Just make the seventh season the last since he's leaving.

He's wrong. When he goes, the show is finished. The Office isn't your run of the mill sitcom-it relies heavily on the quirks of the characters, and if Michael leaves, the chemistry will be thrown off. Bringing in a replacement will feel like a derivative of Michael, and may alienate the audience.
