Steve Carr Picks Up the Rights to Sherman's March
The documentary was one of the Sundance Film Festival's first Grand Jury Prize winners and shows the unique journey of filmmaker Ross McElwee, who had originally set out to retrace the path of General William Tecumseh Sherman's infamous march but, the day that filming was to start, his girlfriend dumped him and the film took on a much personal focus centering on the women in his life.
Carr had seen the film in the 80s and had always stuck with him. While shooting his latest comedy, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Carr was informed that McElwee lived close to the Massachussetts and invited him to the set.
No writers have been set as of yet, but Carr said his film will be a small, quirkier comedy that keeps the tone of the documentary intact.
"For me, this is an opportunity to explore the other nature that I have in terms of filmmaking," Carr said. "I love making big studio movies and doing broad comedy where people get hit in the crotch, but this is another side of me. It's more cerebral and introspective."
