Stephen Norrington Set for The Crow Reboot

Stephen Norrington will write and direct a new version of The Crow, based on the comic created by James O'Barr.

According to Variety, Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media is negotiating with producer Ed Pressman to acquire the film franchise and finance the film.

Pressman produced the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed screen transfer, in which rock musician Eric Draven is murdered trying to rescue his girlfriend from thugs, and returns from the dead one year later to exact vengeance. Though the original became a gothic-style hit that grossed nearly $100 million worldwide, it is primarily remembered for a tragic accident in which star Brandon Lee was killed during filming.

For Norrington, The Crow deal marks the end of a long screen sabbatical. After making his breakthrough with the Marvel Comics hero Blade, Norrington took on a big-budget comic transfer with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Neither the director nor his star, Sean Connery, has made a film since.

Norrington said he felt demoralized by that experience, and the accomplished sculptor spent the next five years writing and working on his art. He made a deal to direct Clash of the Titans for Warner Bros., but left the project, he said, because he was "unable to excite Warner Bros. with my take, or influence the screenplay to any comfortable extent." That pic goes into production early next year with Louis Leterrier at the helm.

Norrington resolved to focus on independent projects, and sparked to an approach on The Crow from Relativity production chief Tucker Tooley and Pressman. Norrington had a relationship with Pressman when they came close to making The Mutant Chronicles several years ago. Both embraced Norrington's vision of the antihero, which Norrington said will be different than the film Proyas made.

"Whereas Proyas' original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style," Norrington said.

No production date has been set.

The original Crow film is fantastic and an iconic film, but to show so much agression to a new vision is unfair.I have been a fan of The Crow since I was an eleven year old boy.The comics and film mean a lot to me and a new vision wont change that. This could finally bring new life to a story that has been so sadly quiet.

I don't care if this has been said already, or if people will strongly disagree. This still excellent movie does not need to be remade. Brandon Lee was f*cking superb. He cannot be replaced. Why do you think the other Crows sucked balls? Because Brandon Lee was the only guy and will be the only guy to ever pull this off perfectly. The Crow itself was not a perfect movie, but goddamit...Brandon Lee made that movie what it is. THERE AIN'T NO COMING BACK!

this movie makes me sick! Brandon Lee! I bitch about this movie in your honor! And even though I despise the idea of it ever being made, I'll go see it and bitch throughout the entire movie about how not like you it will be!

No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!

This is almost a slap in the face to Brandon Lee. I cannot deny, though, the fact that I WILL be seeing the reboot, but by no means am I happy about this. AT ALL.

the first was a bigger darker classic than "dark knight"!!! already there are three crappy "crow" sequels and a short lived t.v. series that never took off,now you want to make a reboot?!? let the man die in peace, for christ sake!!!!

if "LXG was in my opinion a good movie", then your opinion sucks.
If this movie goes forward I would prefer to see an unknown play Eric.

To agree with tyler13d, Marvel should really focus their energies on adapting "The Man Without Fear" for the screen. ( yes I know the Crow isn't marvel, it was an unrelated comment)

I don't understand the hatred of Stephen Norrington. LXG was in my opinion a good movie. The first Blade movie needed a little work thanks to Guillermo Del Toro for stepping up and making the movie the right way. Either way, this new Crow movie should be good if it remains just another Crow movie. Realistic though? How can a man coming back from the dead be realistic? *shakes head* oh well, I'll await further information before giving my final opinion...

My opinion this director is gonna kill the whole movie. I will go see it though to judge between the remake and the original. I guess we'll have to see how it turns out.

  13. Clockworkcookie

Well they can try. But I seriously doubt that the first movie can be topped. It was just brilliant, dark, extremely violent... Not to mention Brandon Lee (RIP). I wonder what the Crow will look like when they try to PG-13 it. ;P

The original Crow isn't old enough for a remake, and the way Proyas filmed it with such dark tones allows it to stand up to the test of time. These is a needless remake.

Wasn't really a shot at you KirkEpsilon, just been in some threads were no matter the character or role certain people just automatically say Karl Urban. lol. Captain America? Karl Urban! Thor? Karl Urban! Barack Obama? Karl Urban.. lol. Just haven't really been impressed by anything he's done yet that's all.. I have no personal problem with him but then again like u pointed out, I am against the movie altogether. In my opinion only one actor gave the character justice, Brandon Lee.

it should be just another movie rather than rebooting the classic original. If that were so...I wonder who the new Crow would be. Karl Urban anyone?

  25. tyler13d

Totally with what Comrade said earlier on...Proyas' Crow is still a classic when it comes to the genre, so it also kinda beats me why anyone would want to re-do it...there's still plenty of stuff out there desperately needing a reboot, so just grab a decent script and cast for say-Daredevil-and get to it. Leave the classics alone...

Salvation is a sequel, not a reboot. The Dark Knight was a sequel. "Hulk" was the Ang Lee film, "The Incredible Hulk" was the reboot. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the new one) was in every sense of the word, a remake.

People need to redefine what the words "reboot" and "remake" have in common, and what they don't.

I would say that because the Crow sequels share little or no continuity with the original, true, Crow film (not a favorite of everyone who has read the O'Barr comic, but I have and it is a favorite of mine)
That this movie is not a reBOOT of a series, but a reMAKE of the original, because it depicts Eric (who has no last name), just as the Proyas film did.

I admire their/his (norrington's) efforts if he truly means to create a less gothic crow (However the graphic work was pretty damn stylized, so I don't agree with reducing the stylization of it)

But to me this sounds like little more than a cash cow to appeal to the Hot Topic crowd.

  27. AnnoyingFilmCritic

Loved the original "Crow" for Proyas's direction, the performances, production design and heart. The sequels were all crap, just like the Hellraiser sequels (H2 was ok). So, this reboot, not a remake, could be cool like The Dark Knight, Hulk, Texas Chainsaw Massacre (with Jessica Biel)and Terminator: Salvation.

I love the first too much to support a reboot. I think anyone who f*cks up an Alan Moore movie doesn't deserve to ever make a movie again. F*ck a reboot, F*ck a remake, F*ck Stephen Norrington, and F*ck anyone who has to do with this project. LEAVE IT ALONE!
