Stephen Herek Is Directing Greatest American Hero

Stephen Herek, director of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, is bringing The Greatest American Hero to the screen, according to IGN.com, by way of ProductionCharts.com. The film is an adaptation of the 1980's TV series of the same name, which starred William Katt as Ralph Hinkley.

No details are currently forthcoming about who might be starring in the film. Herek has previously directed Critters, 101 Dalmatians and The Three Musketeers, so mixing action and comedy is familiar ground for him.

Stephen J. Cannell, who created the television series of The Greatest American Hero, is on-board with the film as a producer.

I used to watch this when I was a kid. I could see someone like Jim Carey playing the role. I do agree with mordfilm, though. If it gets into the wrong hands it's going to suck.

Wow people, I know this was a series in the 80s. I watched it alot! "Look whats been happening to me, I cant believe it myself, suddenly Im ontop of the world, blah blah..", but you dont think this idea was brought up for the big screen after seeing the coming attractions for "Hanc*ck"???

I think of all of the TV-to-Film franchises this may be a good choice. I was a transformers freak in the '80's, and loved the film. I also watched Greatest American Hero all the time. I always thought the "hero" who didn't have the instructions for his magical "alien" costume was a great idea. Slowly finding out what he can do, through trial and error was always funny. However if Disney, or the wrong director get their mits on it, I think it will turn out more like Inspector Gadget did, and totaly fall short of the original idea of the story.
Another possible would be the ABC series "Tales of the Golden Monkey" But that would, as in the 80's, ride on the coattales of the "Indy" film.

I they take the time and do it right, it can be a great, fun movie to watch. The basic idea of GAH was about learning how to use powers without any idea how they work...the ultimate on-the-job training. If you think about it, Superman and Spiderman went through the same process. So, they need to approach the subject seriously and realistically, but remember to keep Ralph down to earth and just a bit overwhelmed with the entire idea, becsaue that is what generated the comedy. If they don't and go just for the comedy value with a Jim Carrey style farce, it is going to blow..big time.
