Star Wars: Underworld to Introduce Time Travel Into the Star Wars Universe

Time Travel will play into Star Wars: Underworld
Time Travel will play into Star Wars: Underworld
Star Wars: Underworld, the long-promised live action TV series from George Lucas, won't arrive on the small screen until at least 2015, and that's being optimistic. We know from various past reports that at least fifty episodic scripts have already been written, and are in shooting order. The hold up is the budget, as Star Wars: Underworld will be shot to look just like it's theatrical counterparts, each of which cost millions of dollars to produce.

With so many scripts already completed, and such a huge expanse of time before any of them are shot, it shouldn't come as a surprise that various story elements have started to leak forth.

We've now learned of a storyline that will play into Star Wars: Underworld and the overall mythology of this iconic franchise, and its one that introduces the idea of Time Travel into George Lucas' beloved universe. This is a sci-fi trope yet unseen in terms of the film and animated franchises to date, at least in terms of traveling backwards against the flow of time.

Warning: Major Spoilers! lay ahead.

AICN has stumbled upon a reliable source that claims the introductory first episodes of Star Wars: Underworld will involve a shady group of intergalactic bandits who gain the ability to time travel, and use their new found power of the Force to travel back to the prequels, hoping to stop the existence of Darth Vader. This will potentially allow for an unmasked Hayden Christensen to make a cameo appearance.

This has yet to be confirmed. So consider it a rumor until otherwise verified.

With Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace coming to theaters this February, it will give curious fans a chance to see if there are any sudden, unexplained disappearances by Obi Wan (Ewan McGregor) or Qui Gon (Liam Neeson) that can now be attributed to the fact that they were fighting Time Lords. Take for instance all that time Obi Wan is left on the ship during their stopover in Tatooine. What happens while he is waiting for Qui Gon's return? Stopping a gang of time invaders from killing Lil' Ani? It's possible.

While time travel has never played into the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, or any of the films, the idea of realspace or hyperspace jumping is acknowledged in official Star Wars extended universe lore. It doesn't quite work like our understanding of time travel. Generally, time travel in the Star Wars universe finds a body being trapped against the natural flow of time, or traveling into the future at a faster rate of time than the rest of the universe (as we see Obi Wan and Qui Gon doing a few times throughout Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace). It is a rare phenomenon, and usually involves a hyperdrive malfunction or extreme manipulation of the Force.

It is unclear how time travel will function in Star Wars: Underworld. And by 2015, this idea could be completely scrapped, becoming a moot point. What do you think? Do you like the idea of time travel in Star Wars? Or does it go against the mythology of the series? Let us know below in the comment section.

Lucas, what are you doing? Why create a series limited to the age of Luke Skywalker. Your new series should focus primarily on the founding of the Jedi and Sith orders and the Hundred Years of Darkness era long before the birth of Yoda. There you could introduce new characters, folklore, and expand upon the force theme. Time travel themes would not mess with your original master peice. Make it a forgotten art of the force lost in antiquity with the death of a great Jedi or Sith master? Comeon now dude. The force unleashed time period is boring. I want my Old Republic period! NOW!

Sorry for late answer.. But the midi-chlorians makes the force reliant on some physical thing.. and not spiritual.. it would be like you needed blood type o-negative to speak to God.. anyway.. thats my thoughts..

@ghostman Just doesn't seem like something they would do, but your idea is plausible.

@ghostman Why be limited to Anakin? There is of course ,more than one way to stop the Sith

You know @slysnide@bawnian-dexeus@avian005 What if this whole Time Lords idea turns into some plot that involves traveling back through time from the future to stop Anakin turning to the Dark Side. which will create an alternate Star Wars future that will then become the TV series?

This news does not compute with the news we recieved early last month. I don't believe this for a second.

@garretbyrne Considering the fact he doesn't have enough funding to make the show, I guess that stops him right there. He also funded Red Tails and still funds Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is not cheap.

@ollie-styrene Never seen why Midi-Chlorians ruin the mythology. Can someone please explain?

more sequels, less prequels, drop the idea of a live action show or I'm going back to "Star Trek".

Why is there an issue with budget, George Lucas is minted with all the re-re-re-releases of his 6 movies. If George really cared he'd use his vast amount of money to fund the show, but he won't because he's a greedy little man, who will ruin anything (Star Wars) to get more money.

they do what star trek has done for decades.. personally i dont like it.. i like it in star trek etc.. but not for star wars.. its like the f***ing midichlorians.. its ruining the mythology,.. and it doesent belong in SW!!

Don't buy it for a second. I'm more shocked that there are 50 episodes already set up on paper. That's fairly impressive. I hope they get the budget, providing it's worthwhile, just so I can see where they're taking this thing.

No, Kenobi hated Anikan in "TPM" so he'd have been more than happy for some time bandits to kill him. Furthermore, that's a bad idea in general considering there are so many better things bandits could do with it, seeing as the Empire works in their favor. Also, major characters WONT be making appearances in the show, so it'd be pretty terrible storytelling to just say they randomly hate Vader without him being there to provide some context outside of some mobster meeting. I don't trust this source, as Lucas claimed he wanted the series to be relatively straightforward and down to earth compared to the massive scope of the prequels and drama of the sequels. I highly doubt this time travel claim is real.

It's a sign that you're running out of ideas when you have to add time travel to a franchise. BTTF and Terminator work so well because time travel is integral to the franchise, not something tacked on later.

i do not know why they just dont scrap it..and go with another cgi show like the clone wars..it would be cheaper more cost effective and use it as a jump off point to further the adventures of han luke and leia...you guys can not tell me that heir to the empire or dark empire would not be bad ass done this way....

After decades of an established mythology. After exploring all the possibilities of the force and the universes beyond that make Star Wars. The idea of introducing a new element to the manipulation of the force seems absurd. Yet, it can also be argued that this is an evolution in the force. The variations of it are gentle and subtle and at the same time extremely manipulative and aggressive. I can understand it evolving to suit a purpose. At the same time, it has to be very thought out and crafty in its introduction. I won't say that it can't work. But I'd have to see it develop before I can agree that it does.
