Star Wars: The Complete Saga breaks Blu-ray sales records in its first week
Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced today that Star Wars is the bestselling catalog Blu-ray Disc of all time with worldwide sales totaling one million units, including 515,000 units sold in North America in its first week alone. This represents $84 million in worldwide consumer spend including $38 million in North America - unprecedented for a nine-disc Blu-ray collection at a premium price.

The thirteen-month campaign to launch Star Wars: The Complete Saga Blu-ray and engage consumers around the globe began in August 2010. From Darth Vader at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a first look at San Diego Comic Con, a first-of-its-kind partnership with eBay, to creating the world's largest lightsaber in the UK, the power of the Force continued to resonate around the world as fans came out in droves to have fun with that galaxy far, far away.

"Once again our fan's enthusiasm to celebrate Star Wars continues to amaze us," said Kayleen Walters, Senior Director, Marketing, Lucasfilm. "Our goal was to deliver a premium product that they could enjoy with their family and friends and we are thrilled that they are enjoying it as much as we hoped they would."

"Star Wars is a franchise with universal stories that resonates as much today as it did 30 years ago," said Mary Daily, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Vincent Marcais, Senior Vice President of International Marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. "With the Blu-ray, audiences can go deeper into the mythology than ever before and reconnect with everything they love about the Saga in the best possible quality."

The comprehensive collection includes the six movies with unparalleled high-definition picture and sound quality, and features numerous deleted, extended and alternate scenes, new documentaries and a cross-section of the countless Star Wars spoofs that have appeared in pop culture over the past three decades. Marking the first time ever that the full Saga is available in one complete collection, Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray also features a coveted peek into the making of the Saga with vintage documentaries, audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, prop and costume turnarounds, retrospectives and more.

Episodes I-III and IV-VI are also available as distinct Blu-ray Trilogy collections. Additionally, the Ask Vader app is now live in the iTunes store! You can download it via iTunes.com

About Star Wars

The May 25, 1977 theatrical debut of Star Wars - on a scant 32 screens across America - was destined to change the face of cinema forever. An instant classic and an unparalleled box office success, the rousing "space opera" was equal parts fairy tale, western, 1930s serial and special effects extravaganza, with roots in mythologies from cultures around the world. From the mind of visionary writer/director George Lucas, the epic space fantasy introduced the mystical Force into the cultural vocabulary, as well as iconic characters such as evil Darth Vader, idealistic Luke Skywalker, feisty Princess Leia, lovable scoundrel Han Solo and wise Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since its 1977 debut, Star Wars has continued to grow, its lush narrative expanding from modest beginnings into an epic, six-film Saga chronicling the fall and redemption of The Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker.

I guess all the people who bitched and moaned that the Blu-Ray's were "NOT" the "Original" Theatrical Versions went and blew their money and went back on their word...!!...

As for me I'm keeping my DVD's and NOT upgrading...since I have the Original Theatrical Versions!

@ROFLitschristian: Yes, a combination of 3 million bds & dvds were sold in its first day of home media release.

@ghostman @slysnide Didn't it pass 1 million on day one?

@ghostman: Well that's the case with any bd or dvd. Unless it was $1 per unit.

@slysnide Well this article states it made more money earnings than actual unit sales with 500,00 copies sold and making 40 million dollars in the US.

@slysnide Correct, and wasn't Avatar the fastest-selling blu-ray/DVD of all time with nearly 3million units sold in it's first four days and not Star Wars?

"The Dark Knight" sold 600,000 blu-rays on its first day of release in the UK, then 107,730 in the US. Granted that wasn't a catalog release, those numbers for one film are far more impressive for first day hauls in just two nations and their territories over a full week of release worldwide. Granted that was the first time "TDK" was released on home media, but those numbers for one film on day one as opposed to six films in a week make this release not seem as huge.

So the biggest Blu-Ray in North America has the record with only half a million sales? Isn't that quite sad with all the Blu-Ray hype?

I got screwed. All the doc*mentary stuff that came with the original dvd's was awesome and none of it is on the Blue-rays. It was still a treat seeing them with better picture and sound. Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones were almost watchable with that kind of quality.

I admit i was one of those who went out and purchased the box set. It's not complete at all they added some material and did away with other material. Needless to say I paid $100 for the box set and sold it off at a loss of both my dignity and $25 this past Wednesday.

This makes me sick to my stomach. Lucas gets another 80+ Billion sales credit to sh*t he put out 40 years ago and just keeps jacking with because he can't rip-off any new characters worth a sh*t. I hope Lucas drowns in his pool of cash like Scrooge McDuck should have.

1 or 2 things could of happened here. All of those people whome bbitched about Lucas not giving them the org film they wanted, all of those who were mad over things being changed around went out and bought the box set anyways, ..2... they bought it anyways regardless of wat they said on here (but arnt gonna admit it) or 3, these websites r lying about their sales just to make this set seem like a masterpiece.!
