Star Wars Rebels takes place 14 years after Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, and in that time, Kanan has been in hiding, much like other Jedi such as Obi Wan Kenobi and Yoda. Kanan has kept his lightsaber under lock and key, carrying a blaster to stay off the Empire's radar. He gets back into action when he re-assembles the crew of his spaceship The Ghost, to fight off the building Imperial army.
Here's what Freddie Prinze Jr. had to say about Kanan coming out of hiding after so many years.
"He's been forced to shove a massive part of his life under the bed, so to speak. Is he living a lie? At a certain point, the lie kind of becomes the reality. And to suddenly be forced back into your Jedi ways, it'd be a bit of a challenge for him. And pretty awesome, too, when you can see what a Jedi can actually do."
Kanan is described as being sharp-witted, but he is also rather stoic, since the Order 66 massacre happened when he was still quite young.
"He definitely has seen more than what a young man should see. And what he had to see was pretty much the worst thing you would have to witness."
Although the actor said he would have taken any role on the series, he's glad that he will voice a Jedi Knight.
"The Jedi is who you want to be. I never wanted to be C3PO. That would suck to just be running from bad guys."
The 37-year-old actor also spoke about how big an influence the original Star Wars movies had on his life.
"For people who are around our age and a bit older, Star Wars is in our DNA. I've heard 'May the Force be with you' about as many times as 'Hey, how you doing?'"
He also revealed that he is starting to prepare his four-year-old daughter Charlotte to watch the original Star Wars movies with him.
"So she can know just how awesome a lightsaber is and she can know just how awesome her daddy is for the rest of his life."
Star Wars Rebels debuts with a one-hour special on The Disney Channel this fall, before transitioning to its regular network home on Disney XD. We reported earlier this month that there will also be a TV movie debuting on The Disney Channel sometime this summer, but the network has not issued a release date at this time.
