Daniel Mindel confirmed at a Los Angeles industry event that he is serving as director of photography on J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII. The cinematographer also revealed that he is shooting the highly-anticipated sequel in 35MM, specifically on Kodak film stock 5219.

Of course, this marks a return to film for the franchise, after George Lucas shot the prequels Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith on digital.

J.J. Abrams is directing from a screenplay by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), with production scheduled to take place next February in the U.K.

Daniel Mindel previously shot Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek and this summer's Star Trek Into Darkness for J.J. Abrams. Other recent credits include John Carter, Savages and the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Star Wars: Episode VII comes to theaters December 18th, 2015 and stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong'o. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

@themoviefanatic Did you seriously not know that the STAR WARS films were released on blu-ray? Actually, looking at that link you provided, it looks like they are re-releasing the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy again on blu-ray this October, but this time in a blu-ray / dvd combo release.

@themoviefanatic using your webpage I have looked up the Blu disc set that I currently hold in my collection. It includes deleted scenes from the OT that buying the individual trilogies did not provide ww.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-Wars-The-Complete-Saga-Blu-ray/14903/

Too bad they didn't shoot the prequels on film, digital looked like crap back then. Now it looks pretty indistinguishable from film so it doesn't make much of a difference for the audience.

@Devastattor I bet that is possible as well, that it could rank up there with Empire Strike Back.

I like this, taking SW back to its roots-practical effects shot on film. Now if the story and dialogue are solid, this movie could rank right up there with ESB.
