Star Trek Writers Dish on the New Film

Star Trek is still seven months away from its May 8 release and that still hasn't stopped the buzz from building. Latino Review pointed us to an interview Wired conducted with Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who talked about their new film and some of the backstory of the film. Warning Potential spoilers ahead.

There's a huge amount of Star Trek material to work with. How did you guys zero in on the particular story you wanted to tell?

Alex Kurtzman: We agreed it was going to be the original crew, and the minute we did that, it limited the scope of where we'd be looking for story.

What is the story about?

Roberto Orci: It's about how the original crew came together, which was never covered in its entirety by either the show or any of the movies. No one has ever told the story of how the Enterprise set sail.

Alex Kurtzman: There are details in canon where the characters refer to their past but there are wide areas of interpretations and sort of blank spots where you go, "Wait, I understand this, but how did they get from here to there before they got to that point?" And that's where you have some room.

Star Trek was released May 8th, 2009 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

Not a fan of the original series, I was spoiled by TNG and DS9, but I still think this should be a fun "popcorn flick".

i don't see a problem with it, but some stereotype loving tardnuggets might be too simpleminded to accept the concept of like two whole scifi space series' simultaneously.

they might even consider it a form of multitasking.
