Star Trek Takes an Estimated $31 Million by Friday

According to Variety, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek had taken an estimated $31 million by Friday, giving Paramount Picture its' second highest opening day ever at the box office for a live-action film.

Playing at 3,849 theaters, Star Trek ranked behind the first day gross of Paramount's Iron Man which made $38.7 million last May. Included in that figure was $4 million of Thursday evening and midnight runs. Previewing on a bulk of its entire theater count at 7 p.m., Star Trek accumulated $7 million on Thursday.

Star Trek also scored the biggest opening day for Abrams in his second outing as a feature director behind 2006's Mission: Impossible III ($16.6 million) and for the sci-fi pic franchise overall, besting the $12.9 million generated by 1996's Star Trek: First Contact. The film, which headlined the 1980s Star Trek: The Next Generation cast previously touted the biggest opening weekend ever for the franchise with $30.7 million.

Based on Gene Roddenberry's '60s TV series, Star Trek has spawned 10 feature films prior to the current installment beginning in 1979. The highest grossing Star Trek film to date remains 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with $109.7 million at the domestic box office.

Last weekend's top film X-Men Origins: Wolverine slotted second with $8.3 million on 4,102, registering a 76% drop and an eight-day cume of $110.9 million.

Star Trek was released May 8th, 2009 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

then course you have the series enterprise which goes back further,i think that's pretty much what did it in,but with the new movie you have an alternate timeline which means anything can happen, shoot for the next movie they could bring khan back or something

i think for me having that many series at once,it seemed a little overwhelming for me

To be honest I hated that movie just for that reason. I watched it once and swore I would never watch it again. I know he has to go sometime, but Kirk has always been my favorite character.

i know, that part was sad, what about when kirk died in star trek generations?

To this day even though I have seen it like a million times it makes me cry, especially when Kirk is speaking before they eject his body.

true, the orginal cast is the best one,i espcially like the last battle in wrath of khan, kind of reminded me of one of those old submarine movies, course it was sad when spock died

I agree, the sequel (we all know there will eventually be on) should have Klingons because that is a normal 'fixture' for Star Trek. My favorite film is Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock. I am partial to the original crew. I do like Jean-Luc Picard as captain but Patrick Stewart will always be Professor Xavier in X-Men to me.

Now I understand and I agree. I never really gave it much thought until now. Do you think it is because of all the white equipment in the new film? It has been awhile since I watched Nemisis, maybe I will have to go watch it again and compare.

Sorry I guess I did not explain myself. When you sad it looks more advanced in this film than it did the last Star Trek movie I meant to ask what you meant by 'the last Star Trek movie'.

Which movie are you speaking of? I agree, Quinto did a great job as well. I appreciated the fact he actually looked like a younger version of Nimoy.

i know carl urban was good,i especially liked zachary quinto as spock,sh*t they all were good.although it's funny how the ship looks more advanced in this film than it did in the last star trek movie

Definitely, already looking forward to it. I just hope Karl Urban has more screen time because I think he did an awesome job as Bones.

There will always be people that hate it not matter what they would have done. I think that is sad because they are denying themselves a lot of enjoyment.

I have to disagree. I have seen every episode of the original series several times, own all the films and this new film was consistent with much of the history. Of course certain items were different, but not much.

FYI so far Star Trek has made almost $154 million worldwide ($104 million domestically), so I think it will beat the highest grossing Star Trek IV.

wonder how all those hard core trek fans are taking it,some probaly felt like now they have no reason to live.

well you do realize that this movie takes everything you thought you knew about the orginal series and completely flushes it down the crapper.

by friday as in tomorrow? cuz this was posted on sunday, so it should say sunday, but given it was posted then, it shouldn't say "by" either. but if it's just 31mil in a week, then that's not too good.

it probaly all depends on wether or not then can get the orginal crew back and it has to have a good storyline too.

  28. saki123

well obviously the first movie to any series is probaly going to be slower than the sequels because the first movie, you have to introduce everyone and that takes time, then with the sequel you add more action or whatever, and don't forget the alien movies, the first one was okay, but i liked the second one better

iatehisliver... hmm that made no sense haha. Spiderman 2 was way better than Spiderman 1. Harry Potter has like how many sequels now lol and they newer ones are better than the first two combined. Originals aren't always good. Terminator 2 was better than Terminator for example. Why did you even bring up Basic Instinct 2 lol? And which Star Wars are you speaking of? The old 2 or the new 2 lol? Attack of the Clones was better than Phantom Menance and The Empire Strikes Back was probably better than Star Wars 1 in hindsight but they all kinda seem to blend (the older films). Lord of the Rings The Two Towers was SO MUCH BETTER than Fellowship of the Ring. So what you said is not true.
