With Star Trek Into Darkness about to hit theaters in exactly two weeks, talk has already shifted to the likely-inevitable Star Trek 3. Screenwriter Damon Lindelof revealed that there are already ideas brewing for a third installment.
Star Trek 3 may focus on the Klingons, according to writer Damon Lindelof
"I think that is a reasonable conclusion. You should always know where you've been, you should always know where you are, but most importantly, and I learned this from Lost, you should know where you're going."
When asked how large a part the Klingons might play in Star Trek 3, the writer gave this response, although he would not confirm or deny that the story is strictly centered on the Klingons.
"You can never see enough Klingons, and I think in this film we've given the audience a little taste, but there's also a promise that there's a larger conflict on the horizon, and that would be fun to see."
The scribe also played coy when asked if Benedict Cumberbatch would return as the villainous John Harrison.
"To answer that question would be to determine whether or not he actually survives this movie, but if he survives this movie, I think that we would be incredibly stupid to not use him again."
While it may not happen in Star Trek 3, Damon Lindelof teased that The Borg and Q from Star Trek: The Next Generation may be introduced into the franchise, at some point.
""You can't talk about Trek and not talk about the Borg, and certainly about Q. Very iconic adversaries from The Next Generation which is, outside of the original cast films, was my entry way into Star Trek, so I wouldn't mind getting - towards the end of our run on Star Trek, maybe baby Picard could be born. There has to be some sort of crossover we're not thinking of."
Star Trek Into Darkness star Zachary Quinto also revealed that both he and Chris Pine are already locked in for a third installment.
"We both signed on for three movies, so if they make a third one, we'll probably be involved in it. It's exciting to see where the characters have come from, and imagine where they're going."
When asked if he would make Star Trek 3 without J.J. Abrams at the helm, Zachary Quinto offered the following response.
"Well, we have no choice. It's not our decision. We believe strongly in J.J. and trust him implicitly. If he's not able to direct a third one, I'm sure whoever he brings on board will be someone who commands our respect."
J.J. Abrams did reveal last month that there is still a possibility he can return to direct Star Trek 3.
Star Trek Into Darkness was released May 17th, 2013 and stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.
