Edgar Ramirez is the front runner to play Star Trek 2's villain
Earlier this week, we reported that actor Benicio Del Toro dropped out of Star Trek 2, and it seems his replacement may be locked up sooner rather than later. Édgar Ramírez (Carlos) is the front runner to win the villain role, with Jordi Mollà (Colombiana) also in contention.

Director J.J. Abrams is expected to make a decision before the weekend, since he is rapidly approaching the January 15 production start date. Édgar Ramírez is believed to test for the role via Skype either later today or tomorrow. It is said the sequel will shoot from January until June. Star Trek cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin are expected to return for Star Trek 2.

J.J. Abrams is directing Star Trek 2 from a screenplay by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof. Our report from a few days ago revealed the villain in Star Trek 2 is Khan, although that has not been officially confirmed yet.

Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

@addiction-non-fatal I still think it's too in line with the original film series, but whatever. If it's good, I'll be happy.

TrekMovie has reportedly confirmed the rumor that Benedict C*mberbatch's villainous role is none other than Khan, the genetically engineered space tyrant. Originally played by Ricardo Montalban, Khan was rumored to be the sequel's villain when Abrams was auditioning Latino talent like Benicio del Toro; the role ultimately went to C*mberbatch after was was called a "very powerful audition." The site also reports that although Khan will be the antagonist in the sequel, the plot will not revolve around the original Star Trek series episode, "Space Seed," where Starfleet first encountered Khan. The other minor spoilers in the film include the return of Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime, a fact that the actor himself revealed during an interview with CNN and a recent tweet. Nimoy's work for the film is reportedly complete, which will make Star Trek 2 his eighth film appearance in the series (William Shatner is next at seven). Lastly, the Klingons might be making an appearance in the Star Trek sequel. KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!

@addiction-non-fatal How does this rule Khan out as the villain? Because he isn't of Latin descent? A good actor would still make that work. With that said, I still feel that in order for Abrams to carve out his own niche in the Star Trek universe, he must differentiate his series from the first. Having Khan as the villain in the second film does not do that; Khan can be a part of the series, but Abrams should wait on bringing him in.

@bawnian-dexeus @pjwolsker @ejk1 @XxNickTheFilmCriticXx @m2 It was just announced that British actor Benedict C*mberbatch Lands Villain Role in STAR TREK Sequel. I guess this rules out Khan being the villain. I guess those who were against Khan being the villain can stop their crying now...

I always love to hear latino actors getting good roles, so this sounds great to me if he gets it. I don't think he will be Khan but maybe someone related to him. For some reason thats what i think.lol

@pjwolsker I didn't say the villain is suppose to be Latin. Khan's character as we all know isn't Latin at all. I'm saying that he has been portrayed twice, once in a TV episode of Star Trek and again in a Motion Picture of the franchise by a Latino. My hunch is if indeed the villain is Khan that JJ Abrams production company will be going with someone similar to that of Montalban.

Maybe I missed something, but what does him being hispanic have to do with Khan?

While the miniseries is very disjointed, Edgar Ramirez did a great job in "Carlos." He'd make a superb villain.

I haven't seen Carlos yet, but from what I've heard, Ramirez is a pretty incredible actor.

Okay, for those of you who say Khan won't be the main villain in the upcoming Star Trek movie, what do you say now? Yet another latin actor chosen for the role...
