Star Trek 2 May Miss 2012 Release Date Window

Star Trek 2 may not make its summer 2012 release date
Star Trek 2 may not make its summer 2012 release date
Back in January 2010, Paramount Pictures set a June 29, 2012 release date for the highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel Star Trek 2. Nearly a year and a half later, the screenplay is still not completed, which has many doubting that the sequel will be able to hit this projected summer 2012 release date.

Director J.J. Abrams has now expressed doubt about making the release himself, indicating they are more concerned with turning out a quality sequel than hitting the right date. Here's what he had to say below.

"I really don't know, we will see. We are working really hard to try and get that movie made as soon as possible, but we don't want to rush anything. The worst thing we could possibly do would be to put something into production to make a release date instead of a great movie."

He also said he's excited to get back to work on Star Trek 2, although the release date isn't the only thing he is unsure of. As of now, it seems J.J. Abrams won't make Star Trek 2 in 3D.

"I'm not yet considering it, but you know, I haven't gotten any phone call from people in suits. I know what's good for me."

We reported last month that screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently working on the Star Trek 2 script from a 70-page outline. Here's what J.J. Abrams had to say about getting back to work with the writers.

"The writers are hard at work on it, and I am excited about getting back to it. We are taking our time, though, because I really do want make sure we do something that is worthy of the first one."

Currently, Star Trek 2 will be released on June 29, 2012, although, if that changes, we'll be sure to keep you posted.

Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

As as they make it great (which will happen as long as J.J. is part of it) then I don't mind it getting delayed.

You would think that after a year and a half, there would be an out line and half the script done by now. I want this out sometime in 2013.

With them taking there time with the script, I wonder if Zoe Saldana could audition for the female lead in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, I mean that is if doesn't conflict with Star Trek2 scheduling, but who knows.

I like the fact that that they are saying it wont be in 3D but i bet the studio heads will have something to say about that when the time comes. Just because he isnt going to shoot in 3D doesnt mean it wont be converted.

They should take their time on this one...... if they feel they couldn't make the deadline, then move the due-date back..... fans (like myself) would prefer they move back the due-date and bring out something awesome than sticking to it and having to watch one of the greatest franchise go down in ruins..... Great news. I would rather have a great movie come out later than a sh*t movie come out earlier. Besides, i love the anticipation.

As much as it pains me to say it, I'm glad they're willing to postpone until 2013 so we can get a good, potentially great, sequel.

jj abrams is such a good director. There have been so many articles that people would normally naturally thumb down by the title, but jj always has such a great response that we thumb it up anyway.

This is a bit of old news, but I absolutely agree with Abrams. 100 percent. Take your time, maybe make it a holiday 2012 release. It'll be all the better for it.
