Peter Weller joins the Star Trek 2 cast
Character details weren't released for Peter Weller's role. We reported last week that Alice Eve signed on to play a character created specifically for this sequel. We also reported last month that Benicio Del Toro has been offered the villain role in Star Trek 2, which some speculate is popular franchise heavy Kahn, a notion that has yet to be confirmed.
J.J. Abrams will direct Star Trek 2 from a screenplay by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof. Bryan Burk is producing for Bad Robot and David Ellison is producing through Skydance Productions.
Production is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2012.
Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

It's kind of depressing to me that not one of the stable of writers listed has any real SF cred. The Star Trek Franchise has definitely fallen on hard times. We're probably in for another mash up of plots from previous Trek films, like the last one was.
