Star Trek 2 3D Confirmed for May 2013 Release

Star Trek 2 hits theaters May 17, 2013 in 3D
Star Trek 2 hits theaters May 17, 2013 in 3D
Earlier today, Sony Pictures moved its sci-fi tale Singularity out of the May 17, 2013 release slot, scheduling it for November 1, 2013. Paramount Pictures is taking advantage of the opening, by slotting its highly-anticipated sequel Star Trek 2 into the May 17, 2013 release date.

Back in June, J.J. Abrams said he won't be making Star Trek 2 in 3D, although it appears that has changed. This new report reveals the sequel will be presented in 3D, but it isn't known if they plan to shoot it in 3D, or convert it in post-production.

We reported last week that Star Trek 2 will start production on January 15, 2012, which gives the sci-fi sequel plenty of time for both filming and post-production. That report also revealed director J.J. Abrams is scouting locations in Hawaii for a "jungle planet."

Star Trek cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and other key actors are expected to return for the sequel, although no deals have been made yet. J.J. Abrams will direct Star Trek 2 from a screenplay by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof.

Star Trek 2 comes to theaters May 17th, 2013 and stars Zoe Saldana, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, John Cho. The film is directed by J.J. Abrams.

@ROFLitschristian -- Aha! Well, I haven't thought about this movie, at all. So, when I found out it was going to be in 3D, it's nothing I necessarily had in mind the times I thought about it. I was mainly wondering about the cast and direction date. It's really something that was quite obvious from the start, but it never came to mind.

To add on. Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1, an all 2d version released movie, on Wednesday, Arthur Christmas, a 3D animated movie only 2 million, and Hugo, a 3d family film with only a little over 1 million not even in the top five. Even though this is only Wednesday, studios were expecting these two films to do well, especially Paramount with Hugo.

@tyler Even so the amount money made from the 3D version still couldn't satisfy studios. Studios expect 3d box office revenue to pay for all of there expenses:Production budget, foreign marketing, distribution, domestic marketing. And there not. Disney executives for Pirates of the Caribbean said their 3d revenue was very soft compared to Imax, which I'm sorry still dominates 3D. Yes studios like money but they also like saving money on something that doesn't overwhelming perform well. Keep in mind substantial amount or not the production house, not the studios, receive the bigger cut. The studios put out for advertising, theater pushes and etc. expenses. Sony/Columbia pictures came out recently and said they would stop paying for the 3d glasses eventually. Basically, 3d production costs more for the studios and they're not seeing a big enough return, at least for this year. Now maybe next year with Spider Man or even Men In Black 3, 3d could turn around big time and become a revolution like it was claimed to be almost 2years ago. If not, then unfortunately, 2012, which says it all with the year, will be the ending in site for this version.

@TheFury ah yes you have me there, those were pointless ones. True they did but they still made a substantial amount of money through 3D which is what the studios care about. Yeah but still, they make a 2D version and a 3D version for a variety of audiences. As much as I am not bothered by 3D becoming forward more, I agree that I do NOT want it to completely take over 2D. Its not fair. It should be around but it should not be wasted on the films that you listed that were better in 2D.

@tyler Fright Night 3D, Conan 3D, Drive Angry 3D, Priest, Green Lantern, Final Destination 5, Glee 3D, Shark Night 3D, and The Three Musketeers all failures. By the way Pirates of the caribbean and Transformers 3 made more on there 2D versions than 3D. Not sure about Harry Potter. But still like I said failure. Also, people don't wanna see a movie a again if they don't like it the first time no matter from 3d to 2d. If this continues, I wonder if studios will continue to drown this gimmick down audiences throats or will 2013 be the end of the 3d craze.

@TheFury well 3D hasn't been a failure this year for films such as Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers 3 when you look at the box office returns, as a film probably, but box office wise no, which is what the studios care about. Harry Potter's 3D was quite subtle but that has been the only decent one. I would like to see how they work the 3D I think they will take a lot of care when doing it. But there is no problem with 3D, they make a 2D version so if no-one likes 3D and criticises it just go watch the 2D no harm done, its not like its the end of the world, there is a 2D and a 3D for every film, don't like 3D, go watch 2D, simple as.

It's amazing how today's push of 3D with studios still refusing to give up on it, with the box office 3d failures of countless movies this year. If this was the 80's, they would have been trashed this gimmick. Which it still is.

This is only good if shot at 5K 48FPS resolution. Nothing else could handle Abrams shooting style.

I think Star Trek will look great in 3D, plus it's never been done before with Star Trek in general. Bummer about the long wait, but i guess that can happen when you have so many great 2012 summer films set for release that push out other summer movies that are then moved to 2013 :/

3D was inevitable. Even if Abrams doesn't want to do it, the studio will make him if it's what they want.

@k-man The Arri Alexa is the best Digi Cine body out there right now. It uses an actual shutter to achieve a more realistic film look rather than an electronic shutter. RED is obviously great too. Arri just has so much more experience manufacturing cameras.

  24. K-Man

Very cool.......I'd prefer that they shoot on film and then post-convert it, but I've come to accept that digital is the way of the future and I've started to appreciate the look of the Red cameras (the Arri Alexa isn't bad either), so as long as they shoot on those, I'm ok.

Many of the "big boys", including Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott and David Fincher have already switched over to the Red Epics, and I saw Robert Zemeckis on the set of Flight yesterday shooting on the Epic, as well, so it's really just a matter of time before everyone, including J.J. Abrams makes the switch (unfortunately). There's no doubt that I still prefer the look of film......but what can you do, right?

I'll definitely see it in 2D but Star Trek in 3D could be pretty cool.
