Imagine Entertainment and Spike Lee are teaming up on the drama, L.A. Riots for Universal Pictures.

The film focuses around the April 1992 riots, written by John Ridley. Variety says the riots occured following the acquittal by a white jury of four police officers who were videotaped beating black motorist Rodney King, caused the death of 55 people, thousands of injuries and close to $1 billion in damage.

L.A. Riots has a possible production start date late next year.
