Rhys Ifans is Spider-Man's newest foe
Commenting on the announcement, Matthew Tolmach said, "We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we're in awe of his talent and think he's the perfect choice to take on this role."
The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.
Marc Webb added, "What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys Ifans' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."
Spider-Man is being overseen at the studio by Matthew Tolmach and Rachel O'Connor. Rhys Ifans is represented by United Talent Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Independent Talent Group.
The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Dont care one bit about this news. yes I know, If I didnt care then I wouldnt be posting something on this however I am so aggravated that this is being rebooted I had to show my unhappiness with it. Its so stupid to reboot something that was just made with the last 15 years.

Villain won't be Vulture because that was the reason the studio decided on a reboot. Sam Raimi wanted Vulture for Spider-Man 4 but the execs thought Vulture was not popular enough, so they scrapped the whole thing.

I don't think Garfield is weak, I'm just not certain he will be a believable teenaged Peter Parker, especially as the series progresses. As I've outlined before he is 27 now, and will be 29 when this movie comes out. This means Garfield will be 30 or older when starting the first sequel. No one be know if he will retain his youthful look for the entirety of this series. I don't blame him, he has to make a living. I blame the executives, who didn't feel giving the role to a teenager was the smart move.

Guys i think a reboot is necessary. I mean Peter would be more interesting if he were still in high school. High school has more drama and what would peter have to cope with in spider man 4 besides villains? I think Andrew garfield is a big improvement over Tobey Maguire and I think he will be the best spider man as well

Spiderman 2 was one of the best superhero movies ever. Yes 3 wasn't that good but i still would've rather seen Spiderman 4 done. Doubt this will be better than 2.

@penguin did u not see the social network? The lead is strong. He won BAFTA for best actor and ur saying hes weak? What is wrong with you people? And Logan Lerman and Anton Yelchin are no where close to Andrew Garfield not even in the same acting league as him.

Doesnt matter who the villain is when you have a weak actor in the lead. Still think Logan Lerman or Anton Yelchin should have been cast as Peter Parker.

@TheNarrator ur absolutely right. Did u feel sorry for his character (eduardo saverin) during the social network? That shows how incredible he is at acting. Not to mention hes won a BAFTA for best actor and Tobey Maguire has won nothing really big

The Narrator: The Better Man
@ed... definitely not a weak lead.
Despite all the great reception of Stone in the film, the main pressure falls on Webb and Garfield. If either of them fail the movie is trashed. Garfield is not a weak lead. Just because he isn't an A lister, does not mean he can't act. He sure as hell can. Enough to portray Parker respectfully anyway. He is no more a risk than anyone else involved in the film; Webb, Stone, Ifan, Vanderbeilt. They are all B listers in their departments.
Overall, this reboot is shaping up, no matter what anyone feels.

@edwood WEAK LEAD????? Are u insane? Watch the social network and ull see that Andrew Garfield needs an oscar nomination for his portrayal as Eduardo Saverin.
I think Ifans will be either the green goblin or Electro.

I really wish I could care about this movie, but I just don't. Great actor playing the villain against a weak lead as Spiderman.

The Jackal?????
is another scientist gone mad. Obsessed with Gwen Stacy, Dr. Miles Warren combined his DNA with that of a jackal after her death. He later cloned Gwen and Spidey and even persuaded the Punisher to hunt down Spidey

The Narrator: The Better Man
Also, @B. Alan, Garfield is a great actor, and as a Spidey fan, I am honestly glad they choose him. I just wish they were setting the film further down the line, with Parker already in college or a teacher (it would fit his age better).
@Cyn, watch The Social Network. Fantastic work there. Besides Tobey was definitely not the strongest actor when he got the role, nor is he now. I am sure Andrew will be a step up.

I could have sworn we already had this article/announcement before... and everyone posted the exact same thing as they did below. Deja Vu? Or am I loosing it?
Anyways, this is an interesting casting decision. I am rooting for him to play Conners.

Max Dillon goes to Peter's school and is even more picked on than Parker. Parker feels sorry for the guy and tries to help him out at times, he even stands up for him once or twice. When he becomes Electro, Peter has to be empathetic to appeal to him. That may not be complex, but it's a relationship to the character.

@ Justice Kowaleski you're right but you get my point why they shouldnt go that route with the green goblin...unless they do two villains each film

Electro doesn't really have a "complex relationship" with Peter, though. He's another street-level super-villain. Perhaps Webb was just saying that, though.
