Spider-Man Gets Irrfan Khan as Proto-Goblin Nels Van Atter

Irrfan Khan is Nels Van Atter

As we reported in early November, Peter Parker's parents Richard and Mary will be making their big screen debut in Marc Webb's Untitled Spider-Man Reboot. It is not known if their ties to S.H.I.E.L.D. will be revealed in this particular story, but The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson will be bringing these characters to life.

It is also being reported that Irrfan Khan will play the second villain in the movie, a thug named Nels Van Atter who is somewhat of a mystery to fans of this particular franchise. According to Marvel lore, he is the evil Proto-Goblin, a research assistant to Mendel Stromm and employee of Norman Osborne (aka The Green Goblin}. He was used in the conducting of high-tech experiments, and served as a test subject for a chemical that was developed by Osborne and Stromm, which turned him into a red beast with fangs and claws.

George Stacy (the recently announced Denis Leary), Gwen's (Emma Stone) father and the Captain of Police, plays heavily into the original Proto-Goblin story as told in the comics.

This story thread hasn't been confirmed at this time, but it is confirmed that Annie Parisse will be playing Van Atter's wife. To read more about Van Atter, Click Here!

It is unclear if Richard and Mary will serve the story in a flashback, a prologue, or if they will present themselves to Parker sometime throughout the course of the movie. Production on Spider-Man 2.0 begins this month in Los Angeles.

The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

July 1997 is not the first Spider-Man story, nor the origin. Ultimate Spider-Man started in 2000, if that is what you are referring to. And the "Torment" arc is from Ultimate. "Way back to the origins" would mean going all the way back to Amazing Fantasy #15 in 1963, which Raimi and company kinda already did. Not sure if they are going strictly on Ultimate with this new reboot series, since I only read the first few issues then decided it was garbage, but including Richard and Mary, and Gwen as the first love interest tells me no, they are delving back to the Amazing origins.

...Couldve been worse, they couldve got Aasif Mandvi for this movie, now that was crappy acting in The Last Airbender, the sound of his voice just annoyed the hell out of me thoughout the film, they shouldve just had Cliff Curtis play Admiral Zhao and kept Firelord Ozai a shadowy background character like they did in the book 1...

this actually sounds really cool, like everyone else i was pretty against this reboot but the casting/characters are really changing my mind it seems like they could have a great film out of this, as long as they dont mess it up which is definately possible, but we'll see

This guy had the smallest role ever in The Last Airbender. So small, he's not even credited for it on IMDB. I doubt anyone can judge his acting abilities based on that film.

Well in that case I'm going to treat this film as if it is a What if story. It'll be interesting to see.

    @Todd
He is a smaller lesser known villain from Spidey's rogue gallery. Literally they are taking from the 1st Spiderman that started off in July 1997 and I guess they're taking from that issue and the Torment Story Arc (1 - 5)

Hmmmm I'm actually becoming interested now, they're going way back into the origins just like Nolan did, interesting...

Proto- Goblin, I've never heard of him and I'm a big Spiderman fan. The character sounds made up.

I would love to see a stand alone Spidy film. A What If, single adventures, no bloody 1, 2 or 3, a franchise similar to Bond.

I should admit though, that I'm a little confused. Van Adder is a Dutch man....this man is Indian. Maybe Hollywood doesn't see race or gender...I'm lost.

@Daveactor7 Yeah, this guy is a good actor. After seeing his performance in Slumdog Millionare I'm convinced that he can blend into this role efficiently. As for The Lat Airbender, blame it on shymawatzhisname.

People shouldn't slander this movie if they haven't even seen a photo of it. I personally think that it's an interesting choice for many reasons, instead of going for a commercial villain it's clever to go for an unknown one because it can be manipulated to become unique. Also, let's not forget that Scarecrow and Rhas Al Ghul were considered unknown villains before Batman Begins came out....and we all know how that turned out.

This movie might be one of the best reboots made in modern times, the approach seems different and unique. Give it a chance.

Think about it for a minute, @Mante. Look at what they are doing. They are setting up a fantastic showdown between Spider-Man and GG, but doing it down the line. So they aren't using someone that you've never heard of. So what? I love the idea, as it lends itself to foreshadowing events to come.

Are you serious? there are going back and back and back....I mean these are forein to the everyday comic book reader....we know the main villians...and they are going back I don't know maybe its just me...but this seems HOKEY!!!! even though Spiderman 3 wasn't up to par...the tobey mcquire spidermans were pretty good.....they should have stayed with that line...I mean do we need a reboot this soon? I hope the movie proves me wrong...but the reports are showing a CGI suit..a spider man inspired by Heath Ledgers performance and spidermans biological parents....I just feel like they are reaching for something here.... Hope they bring the pain....because as far as everything I have read....sounds pretty laim!!!

LOL it's Nels Van Adder, with D's not T's. Lots of typos on MW. Anyway, while many people are saying "Who?" (except the nerdiest of comic readers, of course) and "Pointless," I think it's quite interesting. Van Adder is the OsCorp employee that Norman Osborn tests his serum on when it was still in it's experimental stages - then, again, wasn't it always in an experimental stage? I think he's a friend of Dr. Stromm's, Osborn's assistant. Anyways, it turns Van Adder into a demon-looking dude and hence, Proto-Goblin is born. What I think is interesting about this, is this reboot has the goods - Parker's parents as American spies (hopefully), The freakin' Lizard, Denis Leary as a younger Captain George Stacy, Gwen Stacy - and now a Goblin! Lo and behold this could turn out to be a twist on the Gwen arc. Hopefully Zooey Deschanel will get cast as Betty Brant, but I am definitely liking the character and casting choices so far.
