Spider-man 2 rings up $5 million at midnight

Movie Picture According to The Hollywood Reporter, At 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, the curtain went up on Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 2, one of the summer's most anticipated films, which immediately rang up as much as $5 million at midnight screenings. That figure should put it on track for a potentially record-setting first-day gross in the $30-35 million range.

Those estimates came from Sony's competitors, who were watching the situation closely. Sony was not reporting any grosses from the midnight screenings Wednesday and would not even say how many theaters participated, though competitors pegged the number in the neighborhood of 2,000 locations.

Sony declined to project a figure for the movie's opening-day gross until reports come in today.
