Spider-man 2 and Harry Potter take the top spots

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's superhero sequel Spider-Man 2 sold more than 6 million combined DVD and VHS units during its first day on retail shelves across the country, according to industry sources. That Day 1 sales figure doesn't set any records, but the holiday gift-buying season should bode well for the Sam Raimi sequel, which is expected to get a boost in retail sales before Christmas.

Sony's TV-to-DVD release of Seinfeld: Season 1 & 2 debuted at No. 4 on Nielsen VideoScan's First Alert DVD sales chart for the week ending Nov. 28, while Seinfeld: Season 3 entered the chart at No. 8. Meanwhile, Warner Home Video's fall boxoffice smash Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was last week's top-selling DVD and VHS and was the nation's second-best rental title, according to VideoScan and Video Store magazine charts, respectively.

The nation's top rental title for the week was DreamWorks Home Entertainment's The Terminal, which generated slightly more than $12 million during its first five days.

Spider-Man 2 was released June 30th, 2004 and stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Alfred Molina, Rosemary Harris, J.K. Simmons, Donna Murphy, Daniel Gillies. The film is directed by Sam Raimi.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released June 4th, 2004 and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Richard Griffiths, Pam Ferris, Fiona Shaw, Harry Melling, Adrian Rawlins, Geraldine Somerville, Lee Ingleby. The film is directed by Alfonso CuarĂ³n.
