Spectral Lands at Legendary Pictures

Legendary Pictures acquires Spectral script
Legendary Pictures acquires Spectral script
Screenwriter Ian Fried has sold his spec screenplay Spectral to Legendary Pictures.

The story centers on a special ops group who hunt down and destroy evil ghosts which are starting to take over Manhattan. The project is being compared to Ghostbusters, but with a much darker tone. The writer's pitch sold for six figures to Legendary Pictures.

It is said Ian Fried made the sale after presenting a "rip reel" to Legendary, a mash-up of scenes from other supernatural-themed movies which represented the tone and visual style of Spectral.

No production schedule was given for Spectral.

@skywise - Thanks, it's rare for me to find an honest let objective opinion. So just from having this conversation alone I'll make sure your one of the first on here to let know when I'm done ;). Right now I'm trying to just flush out the ideals of the story, write it out, maybe one rewrite then just do the damn thing. Otherwise it won't get done, and i will never forgive myself for possible letting a good ideal go to waste.

@Number1Wolverine thank you! When the time is right i will bounce some ideas around these boards.

And of course you will have any support i can lend and i am sure that the rest of the MW fam will support you the best they can. I would also love to read some of your stuff but i know how delicate that can be when your rewriting and rewriting. At any rate, you can always bouce ideas off of me and i will be nothing but honest with you. Of course i expect the same in return =D

@skywise - I know it's crazy, i for one would love to see someone on here who is a true geek take the voice of the MovieWeb community to Hollywood and show them what the fan boys really want. And stay motivated man, because i would love to read your story one day. I'm currently working on a couple of things myself, i'm freeing up sometime now so i could have it done by 2012. So how's hoping i get done, and hopefully i have the support of my fellow MW geeks ;).

@Number1Wolverine Your right, there seems to be quite a bit of talent floating around these parts. i am definatly going to finish my book and have already started looking at ways to get it out there but right now i am rewriting and really trying to tighten it up. Anyway, i love the positive attitude. That is becoming more and more rare, especialy on the internet.

I am not ready to share my story but i will say its fiction and its been in my head for years. Its like..the story was there just waiting to be written. It seems to have taken on a life of its own as corny as it sounds. Once i get it tightened up a but i would love to share the synopsis but ...just not yet.

There is a lot of talent here at MW, that is not hard to see. And for the most part everyone is pretty damn supportive. They might notbe the best news site but the MW team is great and the users are exceptinoal.

@skywise @bawnian-dexeus - All this talk about screenwriting is getting me excited. And you are so right @skywise, studios will say they don't like your ideal in a heart beat and then one year later a movie is coming out with your ideal in it. That's why so even actors start their own production company, because they know how Hollywood acts.

And @skywise, getting your book published isn't hard at all. There are millions of book publishers in the world, it's really just how you want it done. Some will publish your book, but you still will have to put in work by getting the word out yourself. But that wouldn't be hard either, i'm pretty sure if you published a book your fellow men on MW will support you.

It's crazy but i see alot of chats about writers here on MW, and i don't know about you guys but i'm pretty curious to read what kind of stories my MW community have in their heads. Because we all talk about movie, but to see if someone on here can show us something original would be pretty amazing to me ;).

@bawnian-dexeus I find scripting to be more difficult than novelization. Its much easier to write a story (for me anyway). But a friend of mine is working on a script and i have been helping with the technical stuff.

@skywise well, screenwriting isn't my goal, but ideas don't happen by themselves

@bawnian-dexeus I write a lot too. I am working on a novel but i am so busy. I was actually in Film School but dropped out for "adventure"

Did a bit of traveling and then wound up in the army. I am now trying to get in with KBR to go on an expedition to Antarctica, after the next semester. I hope it pans out.

Just keep writing. I found that a lot of my early works were very pretentious but after certain events of my life unfolded i seem to have found a voice. I will probably never be published so i continue to study but i will never give up.

You never know man, maybe you will be the next big screenwriter!

@skywise And that I;m now adapting a 3-4 part prequel to TDKR from one the Vengeance of Bane comicbook. I basically learn as I go with others telling me what works and what doesn't. I take critics opinions like a boss, though I never learned why i didn't get into the film class I wanted.

@skywise Well, next semester I'm taking a creative writing course titles "Writing the Screenplay". I've shelved a book because of my work and school. But my point was, pitch sold for that much it makes one wonder

  14. skywise

@bawnian-dexeus well now i feel downright silly. But seriously, dont pitch ideas. They will tell you they are not interested and then have their inhouse scripters steal your idea. Its not copyrighted unless you write it down. But i have no idea that you are full of awesome ideas.

Ever think about doing some scripting? For real?

@bawnian-dexeus i read an article recently where they were discussing that topic. The pitch topic and then the studio says they are not interested and then 6 months later you pitch is a movie and yo have been cut out of the loop.

Write write and more write. Then sell the script. Dont just give them ideas and then have them steal it from you.

i DID detect your sarcasm but i just thought it was an interesting article.
