Smaug to Debut in 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' Says Benedict Cumberbatch

We are just four months away from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey arriving in theaters this holiday season. One of the most anticipated aspects of this three-part Middle Earth adventure is the inclusion of Smaug, a dragon that will be portrayed through motion-capture techniques by Benedict Cumberbatch. The actor recently spoke about when his fire-breathing character will first be seen on-screen.

"I think my eye might open at the end of the first film and then you'll get the rest of me in the second."

This interview took place before it was confirmed that they are adding a third movie to the already-planned two-part saga, which may offset this notion of introducing Smaug in the first film. It is, though, still possible that we may see Smaug's eye-opening scene at the end of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey as planned, to tease the follow-up The Hobbit: There and Back Again the following year. There has been no word on what the third movie will be called yet, nor do we have any story details. This third chapter may not have anything to do with Smaug at all.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released December 14th, 2012 and stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott, Graham McTavish, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, Stephen Hunter. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Surprised they're going all the way to The Lonely Mountain in the first movie. I expected them to end somewhere in Mirkwood or Laketown. This makes me wonder what they're actually going to do in the second movie. I don't see how you can fill an entire movie with the buildup to Smaug's awakening and the aftermath if you start at that point in the story. Maybe this "eye opening" scene is actually just a cutaway to show the audience that Smaug is indeed alive and well (a subject of some speculation in the novel) while someone tells the story of the destruction of Dale. That could be an interesting way to end this first film. Honestly, I'm just curious to see exactly how they're going to parse this thing. The whole trilogy breakdown has thrown me for a total loop.

Throughout the whole of the first film his character is built up as this monstrous character that annihilates everything in his path and shows no mercy.

He comes at the end of the first flick, which by what I've seen and read looks pretty f*cking radical.

Smaug, coming to life fully loaded with CGI will be a remarkable sight for my eyes to behold. Smaug has been nothing but visions in my imagination, since first introduced to me as a child; the comparison on film will be fun. Since I travel on business for Dish frequently, I've decided to reread the book preparing myself for the release in December. I'd like to see Smaug in the first film with still enough content to stretch equally over three films. Speaking of three films, I hope I make it to theaters for all three films; my schedule leaves little time for play, especially with all the traveling. With most movies I wait until the Blu-ray is released from Blockbuster @Home; I bring it along as airport entertainment. Monotonous waiting is no friend of mine, but LOTR was spectacular in theaters; we will see.

He'll probably appear in an opening sequence explaining the destruction of Erebor, maybe with a dwarf narrating like Galadriel did in Fellowship of the Ring.
