Skyfall becomes the highest-grossing U.K. movie of all time
EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment are delighted to announce that Skyfall has made history in the UK to become the highest grossing film of all time overseas.
Skyfall has now taken a staggering 94,277,612 pounds at the UK box office in just 40 days on release, making box office history and overtaking the record previously held by Avatar which had a lifetime gross of 94,025,632 pounds during 11 months on release in UK cinemas.
Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond adventure, continuing the longest running and most successful franchise in film history, opened in 587 cinemas across the UK and Ireland on Friday 26th October, and is still on general release.
Here's what producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in response to this fantastic news.
"We're overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time. We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success."
Skyfall was released November 9th, 2012 and stars Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Bérénice Marlohe, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw. The film is directed by Sam Mendes.

@ghostman No I got the attempt at the juxtaposition of M as the bond girl as opposed tot he usual flow of things, but this did not work as well as he hoped, not because the M story wasn't handled well but cause the other girls were truly underutilized while the villains story was very silly, because it was more a 'mommy issues' story, so the brilliant villain being this guy who is just in pain emotionally almost nixes all the work they do to make him terrifying

@youngrizo Dude, as for the Bond girl problem you had, didn't you know that M was the Bond Girl this time? I thought that was genious for it has never been done before.
@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx The thing I loved most about Casino Royale was that it reinvigorated Bond and captured the gritty that Bond is. Skyfall, is more of an old-school throwback to the early Bond films and is an instant classic for the nostalgic feeling it left me with. The conclusion is Skyfall was nice, I felt that Casino Royale's conclusion dragged a bit and Vesper's death felt unnecessary to the plot.

@youngrizo -- Yeah! It was just silly. Agreed.
@ghostman -- The conclusion is so, so much better in "Casino Royale", though. Better execution, and better chemistry, too. Needless to say, a better movie, overall.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx I'll let that slide for they are both equally great in story and action. We all know Quantum of Solace was the worse out of the three.

Oh god how did I forget that fight? in the Komodo Dragon pit? oh yeah it was boring and lacked creativity.. also the bond girl issue... though I do like that there is a clear love of bond in this film, a respect for the character, it reminds me of Superman Returns... all the best intentions in making an homage to the originals and yet the fun and awesome got lost in the love of something else

@youngrizo -- I agree with most of your points; the ranking of the latest Bond films not being one of them. Even with very little to work with, Javier gave a great performance. I applaud the guy. Tom Hardy accomplished the same thing with "The Dark Knight Rises"'; another disappointment.
I didn't like the "Hannibal Lector" escape scenario, either. That was just f*cking pathetic. There's over-the-top, and then there's "Skyfall". The fight involving the lizard was so....un-Bond like, for lack of a better term. At least, as far as the recent Bond films go. Sporadic bits of cheesy dialogue, vague psychological themes, misuse of the Bond girls; I can't put a bigger emphasis here.
*SPOILER(?)*
We get a talented, attractive bond girl that's given less than 10-minutes of screen time, and then blown away. And the other is just, there. Not even as eye-candy.
All of those issues, along with some of yours, accompanied with the silly villain's signature, and we have a moderately flawed, but decent movie. A disappointing one, at that.

The problems I have with the movie are as follows
- First and foremost it's very much this fanboy loveletter to Nolan's Dark Knight that it's predictable start to finish.
- Javier Bardem's acting chops are wasted on a second rate Joker wanna be.
- They hammer on the 'bond is getting old' nail so often and to the point, I was wondering, if they realize this is not the kind of franchise where you bring up age in the main character as the character has existed in films for far so long the idea in itself is goes against the principle of 007 as a character.
- The villain is a character written to be so brilliant with technology but you never actually see him do anything in that regard, it's all supposed to be stuff that has happened offscreen and you take it and nod, but even if you ignore that, they say he is this brilliant mastermind who made a 5 year plan to basically expose himself and his plan to walk into a courtroom and shoot his target.
Ever heard the saying "so smart it's stupid"?
The writing, i.e. the dialogue between the characters, and the very rare action moments are the film's only real positives in my opinion. there's a lot of unnecessary hand holding done to make sure the viewer get's the point they are trying to make. This is a side effect of the director flat out admitting he was inspired by the Dark Knight, problem is Nolan did it better, all of the themes hammered into your mind in the Batman franchise are underlying themes that only require the right speeches here and there whereas in this film, every single character pretty much is there to remind you bond is 'old' ... it's a weird writing choice.
Because of the lack of action and the focus on bond's age and the stupid master plan, the movie succeeds only in boring me to tears and annoying me simultaneously... because it's trying so hard to be about something that is not really what Bond is about.
Though I will say this, the one thing done very well is M's speech in the court about why her group, and people like James are still necessary in a post cold war era. That was very well done, not too cheesy and not bad, just perfectly done, with the shift from her in the court while bond is chasing down the villain

I would and I thought Skyfall was gonna be my favorite before I saw it, but then you see it and as a film lover, as a spy film lover and as a fan of not just Bond but action and drama, this movie is very superficial, on the surface if you ignore all the issues it's easy to enjoy it, but I saw it once then saw it a second time just to gain perspective and ruined the whole movie for myself, there are so many flaws it's incredible

@youngrizo Given the general consensus, I would have expected you to rate Quantum lower than Skyfall.

And to think MGM almost dropped the ball on the whole thing, congrats Skyfall and you can guarantee I'll be paying for a movie ticket as long as Craig is Bond.
