Sherlock Holmes Edges Out Avatar for the Christmas Box Office Crown?

Going into the Christmas holiday, two films were set to square off for holiday supremacy, and it was quite a close contest indeed. Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes just barely beat out Avatar by a fairly slim margin.

It was said that early numbers revealed Sherlock Holmes took in an estimated $25 million on Friday while Avatar was close behind with an estimated $24 million. Both films are actually tracking for holiday weekend grosses of $70 million, and if that happens, it would be the first weekend that two films grossed more than $70 million in one weekend.

Other notable Christmas grosses were Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with a $12 million take on Friday and the Nancy Meyers film It's Complicated, which tookin $7.5 million on its opening day yesterday.

Sherlock Holmes was released December 25th, 2009 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong, Eddie Marsan, Robert Maillet, Geraldine James, Kelly Reilly. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie.

Avatar was released December 18th, 2009 and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel Moore, Giovanni Ribisi, Michelle Rodriguez, Laz Alonso. The film is directed by James Cameron.

    (Insert), I don't think War-Machine was bitter over JUST Twilight's New Moon. I think he just didn't like all the of the crappy movie lately in his opinion.

    Personally, better movies have come out lately than in summer or spring.

    ...Well I saw "Sherlock Holmes" ... I wasn't that impressed ...After "ALL" the hype and build-up ... ..."Sherlock Holmes" was dour, slow, and with little to stimulate the mind or the emotions, Sherlock Holmes is a big bust. .....Sorry Guy !!

    Films like The Dark Knight, Titanic, and Return of the King hold Box Office Records.
