Shazam! Movie Isn't Dead Says Geoff Johns

Shazam! movie is not dead yet
It's been since March 2009 that we've heard any kind of substantial news about the big screen adaptation of DC Comics Shazam!, which had Dwayne Johnson attached in some capacity. It's not know if the Journey 2: The Mysterious Island actor is still planning to don tights for this superhero adventure (various reports had him playing both Shazam! and Black Adam), but we do have a confirmation from screenwriter and comic book creator Geoff Johns (Green Lantern) that the movie is not dead.

Geoff Johns is currently writing The Curse of Shazam! for DC Comics, and while speaking about his work on this monthly title, he gave an update on the film.

When asked if the project had been scrapped, this was his response.

"Oh, no, Shazam!'s always...There's always a possibility for Shazam!. There's always talk about Shazam!. And I can't get into the specifics on that, but yeah, there's hope for Shazam."

Geoff Johns was then asked if his current work on The Curse of Shazam! was being set up as a template for the film.

"Not really. It's got some elements that I pitched in there, and some of the same characters, obviously, because the characters cross over. Tonally, it's probably pretty close."

After watching Haywire, I want Gina Carano to play Wonder Woman. And on another note, Geoff Johns should have written the scrip for GL.

If GL was put together in the 1980's everyone would have loved it. But in today's standards the masses seem to disregard it as cannon poodoo.
There is only one thing wrong about it, it relied on too much CGI.

@bawnian-dexeus - Funny but I think Tom could have actually been a good Shazam.

@dan1 - I really want to see a Wonder Woman movie, but I want to see a Shazam movie even more then Superman. I think he will get off the ground before Wonder Woman, because studios today are just so sexist when it comes to heroines now a days. Now that I think about it, it's all Green Lanterns fault. If that would have been a huge success then we would be hearing more about other heroes like The Flash, and Wonder Woman getting off the ground :(.

@ejk1 - I agree about most of the things you said, but I don't think DC needs to wait until MOS comes out to think about other characters. Even if MOS is a bomb ( not jinxing it) but just saying even if it is a lesser known character movie could still do pretty well. They are all already writing a Flash movie, Wonder Woman has been in development for some time so I think all she needs is a good director similar to how Spider-Man was in development hell for 20 years until Raimi. And I hate to say this but I really don't think a Green Lantern sequel is happening, Ryan is about to make Deadpool ( which he should have done before Green Lantern, but that's just me) so like you said a reboot it is.

@bawnian-dexeus - Lol at your comeback comment to @ROFLitschristian .

@supermanvenom - Your right ten years is a little long, but it still needs to be rebooted. Even though like you said it wasn't even that bad, but that in itself meant be the problem. Because it was suppose to be Epic. @zender

@rufio - I take it your not a Rock fan lol.

@Jeronimo-Mico - He's already signed on to play Black Adam, hopefully it just gets made before he is a old man.

How can anyone hate the Green Lantern film? I loved it from beginning to end and I'm not a fan of GL. Two old friends of mine were extra's on it but I really liked the performances of what the actors had to go through.

@ejk1 Seriously wait ten years for Green Lantern. I didn't think the movie was as bad as everyone says it was. I think Ryan Reynolds would make a kick ass Flash though.

Before DC does anything, they need to wait until after Man Of Steel comes out. Why? Because out side of Batman, DC hasn't had a film based on a DCU character that was both a critical and commercial success in 30 years. So, they need to see what MOS will do for audiences and critics alike, and then take stock. The following issues should include:

Green Lantern sequel. Shelve it, wait ten years and reboot, or green light?

Flash movie franchise. Find the right cast, director, and story.

    Wonder Woman. Same as Flash.

Should DC take the chance on lesser characters the way Marvel is with Dr. Strange? In personally would like to see a Birds Of Prey, or a Huntress/Question team up film. I guess Shazam can fit in this category. But nothing should happen until after MOS.

How about a Wonder Woman movie beforehand? You know, her being part of the Big 3 and all. Oh wait, that's f*cking crazy talk. I'll just shut up.
