Sean Penn Backs Out of The Three Stooges and Cartel

Two major studio films are now without a two-time Oscar-winning actor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sean Penn will not be appearing in two major films he signed on for, The Three Stooges and Cartel.

It was said that the actor, who picked up his second Oscar for his leading performance in Milk, is taking time off from his career to focus on his family. It was said that the break could be longer than a year, and Penn has already informed the two productions of his decision.

The Cartel production is said to move on without Penn and recast the role, as there has been no start date planned, but The Three Stooges is left with a bit of a bind. An August start-date has already been slotted by MGM, with a 2010 release date set and Jim Carrey and Benecio del Toro have signed on has Curly and Moe, while Penn was going to play Larry. It is unclear whether the directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly will re-cast Larry or wait for Penn to become available again, although if they wait, they could lose Carrey and del Toro.

The Three Stooges comes to theaters April 13th, 2012 and stars SofĂa Vergara, Jane Lynch, Sean Hayes, Larry David, Will Sasso, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko. The film is directed by Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly.

Waterbug comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Josh Brolin, Mike Sharpe. The film is directed by Asger Leth.

    good, now i will go see Three Stooges. Penn, despite being a good actor, is one i don't support. Three Stooges' cast still seems odd though - Carrey has a hard time not being Carrey. farrelly bros. have a hard time not being gross and with the Aptow gang treading on their original brand of comedy they could go all out and ruin the stooges brand.

    newkill, in reference to your comment of the WORST BEST ACTOR WINNER;
    i would like to remind you 2002's ADRIEN BRODY winning for THE PIANIST over NIC CAGE in ADAPTATION, and DANIEL DAY LEWIS for GANGS OF NEW YORK(despite the flawed ending, the character was brilliant!).

    SEAN PENN is an arrogant, opinionated prick!
    BUT he's the most versatile actor in his age category. His talent is undisputed, OSCAR or NOT!

    He continues to make smart choices in the projects to jumps into. Steering clear of this is no exception.
    This is a misguided film.

    Good for Penn. This is going to be a Three Stooges kind-of revamp moviebuff, so I'm pretty sure that the Farrelly brothers will casr Evan Handler. I disagree with you Newkill and Blaze. I think Sean's a terrific actor.

    That sucks. They should try to get Evan Handler who played Larry in the HBO film "The Three Stooges"! I think he acted and looked like the original Larry! Just a thought!

    This sucks, but they better re-cast him. They can't afford to lose Carrey and del Toro.

    I hope he stays away forever. The worst academy award winner for best actor ever.
