As we reported in an earlier story, Samuel Bayer is not planning on returning to direct the sequel for A Nightmare on Elm Street, and instead, /Film is reporting that he is interested in developing an adaptation of a graphic novel:

"There's a comic- I'm sure my agent would kill me for this, because I'm sure I'm not supposed to talk about it or whatever, but I don't really care, is that- no, my assistant is shaking her head. No. No? No? I was going to mention a project. Shut up? Okay. I'm doing what people tell me. Yeah, I'll bury myself with this one. There's some very, very cool stuff out there. I'm really into graphic novels and really into the superhero genre, and I really think there's some interesting stuff going on, and I think that's what I'm leaning towards."

According to Shock, the comic book property is Garth Ennis' The Boys.

"There's one comic book I really dig that I want to go after that's bad-ass. I'd like to get it, it's called The Boys. It's about a group of mercenaries and they're job is to kick the shit out of superheroes who get out of line. It doesn't get any better than that. In the world of The Boys, superheroes are scumbags. My youngest brother is a comic book historian and he introduced me to a lot of graphic novels like "The Dark Knight." There are some great books I don't think people have tapped into yet."

The film is currently optioned by Columbia Pictures, who have set Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay to write the script.

Based on the Garth Ennis/Darrick Robertson comic book "The Boys," which revolves around the government's decision to have the CIA monitor all superheroes using a Black Ops team called "The Boys" and what happens when a Scottish conspiracy nut named Wee Hughie, whose girlfriend was killed by a superhero, is inducted to join the group when they're reformed to take down rogue superheroes who have gotten out of control.

No production date has been set.

The Boys comes to theaters in 2012. The film is directed by Adam McKay.

Thank you, Jesus! ...or the Easter Bunny. ...AND Kwanzaa Man, for sure!

This property is a dream come true. Trust me. For every sissy, stupid, down-right "that sh*t wouldn't go down that easy in my book" superhero moment: The Boys has an answer. God, when Ennis' Preacher just kind of fell through, I was totally bummed. This guy's work has been totally bastardized by the industry. The Punisher movies could have been great. HBO is the land of "dreams can come true" and that was where Preacher was supposed to land, I think? If Ennis retains even a meager amount of control and if HBO spends one tenth of an iota as they did on all those Spawn cartoons or Carn-i-val we're home free.

Anyway, I'm crossing every appendage I have for this one. If Kick-Ass, The Walking Dead, and 30 Days of Night can get treatments there is hope. Hell, how many god awful Blade movies did they make and that property has ALWAYS been sh*t!?!
