Sam Raimi to 'Get Back to Basics' with Spider-Man 4

Director Sam Raimi has certainly heard the fan's concern's over his last superhero film, and vows to make the fourth film even better. Coventry Telegraph recently spoke with Raimi who revealed his approach to Spider-Man 4, using a more simplistic approach that he learned on his last film, Drag Me to Hell.

"I think I've learned about the importance of getting to the point and the importance of having limitations, and I'm hoping to take that into a production where I'm actually allowed to explore with more of the tools to pull it off with a little more splendour.

"I hope I don't lose that edge that I've just found. That would be my approach to Spider-Man 4: to get back to the basics."

When asked about the criticism of Spider-Man 3 and the multiple villains in the film, Raimi said he agreed.

"I think having so many villains detracted from the experience. I would agree with the criticism."

Yeah I noticed that too, some shots are like really good graphics, then others look uber fake haha.

Yes it was awesome like the Birth of Sandman scene was so good, they had to actually create the technology for that scene.

Yeah, I see what you mean as far as CGI overall in the films, yes they got better with each movie, you're right. I just wish they would get the Spidey graphics better like him jumping into the window in "2" and swinging around. Like some shots are good, but others I'm like "so fake." Like you think they would see some of these shots and be like, "we gotta make these better, they look like video games." But no, they keep these shots like in "3" when Spidey lands in front of the American flag at the end. I have to say the best Spidey graphics must be the very last scene in "Spider-Man 1." All other graphics are great.

Yeah all the Sandman CGI parts were really f*cking good. Like when the wind is blowing him away I was like "wow".

No, Vital, CGI in Spider-Man 2 is NOT better. And yes I have watched them both countless times. One spot you can tell is at the very beginning of "2" when Spidey is swinging with the pizzas and kicks his leg up right before he swings down to save the two kids. That shot where he kicks his leg up is the most cartooney thing I have ever seen, and that type of CGI resonated throughout the film. You didn't see unrealistic, fake-looking CGI shots like that in "1." Also, "3" was better than "2" in terms of CGI but tried to perfect the cartoon shots they experimented with in "2." Actually the CGI for Sandman was actually some of the best in the series, although what I am actually referring to is Spidey swinging around. Not explosions or anything else. Just webslinging. Guess I should have been more clear with that.

Look for that shot in "Spider-Man 2" you will then know what I am talking about.

CBF, watch Spiderman again, then watch Spiderman 2, CGI in 2 is much better. The only things that look funky in Spiderman 1 is anything to do with explosions, it looks fake, kinda like Independence Day's explosions.

I still never understood why everyone on here hates X-Men 3, I thought it was pretty dang good (Magneto was the sh*t).

SM-3 to me was like X-Men 3 or Batman & Robin. Waaaay too many charactors on screen to keep up with.

Good to hear this. I mean, why are the first movies of whatever generally great? Limited budget. Limited technology.

Can't say I'm a fan of Sam Raimi. Never liked the Evil Dead series or the Darkman films, actually, no, that's not entirely true, I enjoyed the first "Darkman" but that's it. Never saw "Drag Me to Hell" but like I said, not a big fan. So when I saw how he turned Spidey into a film franchise, I liked him for being a supposed "fan" to which I thought he might give Spidey his just due in the films but then again I soon learned he wasn't that much of a fan, or he didn't care at all about Spider-Man comics post-Stan lee/Steve Ditko. So when I heard things like he purposely didn't touch Spidey's REAL first love, Gwen Stacy, in S-M1, because so as not to go near the death storyline, I was like okay I can understand that, esp when Grant Curtis said they modeled MJ in the film after MJ/Gwen from the comics - half/half. But then when I heard she would be in S-M3, I was completely irate (I was like "Are you KIDDING ME???!? What was Spider-Man 1 all about then?") and felt betrayed because he purposely left her story untouched where it should have been (S-M1), all for what? so he could throw her in the mix in the third installment? And what purpose do The Stacy's serve in that film? No, no, no - Raimi is clearly not a fan. And that is only one example.

I do not hate on Raimi because of the Venom mistreatment, in fact I think of that more as "the last straw" from fans so to speak, but now I just know that he will never have characters post-Lee/Ditko era in his Spidey films again. But as far as the visual look to the films, yes, I think that he had a good vision especially with the first film (which had the best SFX out of all of them), and that Scott Stokdyk still has a lot to learn about how to make CGI look realistic. Put it this way: he's no John Dykstra, just compare S-M1 VFX with SM-2 or SM-3's VFX. Not as fake-looking. (BTW the Spydercam sucks)

personally i think raimi did a great job with all three spidermans. the problem fans have is the portrayal of venom, the amount of screen time for venom and the actor that played venom. It was known even before spiderman that raimi did not want venom but was convinced after avi arad convinced him that it was a very popular character that fans wanted to see. yes i personally did not like SM3 as much as two but i did not like SM1 as much as two either. i am glad he is doing it, and it sounds like he is listening to fans, which has been proven that alot of filmakers do not in many genres. and yes drag me to hell was great too... it reminded me so much of the evil dead films, with that horror comedy element, took me awhile to watch it but after all was said and done enjoyed it.

My point is that Iron Man 2 has three villains/antagonists plus the american government as antagonists. They want Tony Stark to give them the Iron Man armor and of course he says no. How do I know this besides the interviews that have been on just about every movie and comic book movie website, the comic con footage was leaked temporarily.

Yeah Drag Me To Hell wasn't that great, it was really gross (if you like that kind of sick/gross stuff that happened in it). The only parts that were "good" were unfortunately the gross parts. The movie itself was f*cking retarded though, the whole plot was painfully put together. A goat shadow? Wow. My point exactly. I was expecting it to be bad ass cause everyone talked about how good it was so I watched it and I'm like, 'so why did people like this?' It even had a predictable as f*ck ending. Saying it's a masterpiece obviously shows you how low your bar is lol. If that's a masterpiece then Jeepers Creepers is Oscar worthy lol. And I like JC so that's saying something.

  30. The Narrator: The Better Man

I'm glad he's learned from his mistakes. And I despised part 3 except for the part where spidey throws a goblin bomb thingy at Harry and BOOM! Lol. That was pretty sweet. But the movie sucked as an overall, and not because it was a terrible movie so much as it was a huge downslide from the greatness that was Spiderman 2. It had a bit too much lovey dovey stuff in that one as well, but was literally one of the best comic book movie ever. So I think him getting "back to the basics" as he put it, is a good thing. Bring it! (P.S. pleease put Electro inn..);)
