Sam Raimi Talks The Hobbit!

At the recent press junket for Spider-Man 3, Director Sam Raimi addressed talk about New Line Cinema's Bob Shaye approaching him to helm The Hobbit. Here's what Raimi had to say on the matter:

Might you do The Hobbit next?

Sam Raimi: The truth is, I just don't know what I'm going to do next. That's the most honest answer I can give you. I can't honestly say, even though I have spoken to Bob Shaye, I don't know that I can honestly say that anything's been offered to me until some time in the future, because it isn't exactly right, exactly true.

So where are The Hobbit talks with Bob Shaye at?

Sam Raimi: I spoke to him once. It's a little overblown I think. That's why I don't want to pretend that it's bigger than it is. I had one conversation about the possibility of it and that's really where it's at.

Is there any fear in your mind that the fans are so attached to Peter Jackson's vision that you wonder, "How will they take me doing the project?" If you did go to the project is there any talk about getting some of the actors...

Sam Raimi: I haven't had any of those thoughts, yet, because I think it's still Peter Jackson's project. It'd be so premature. I'm so overwhelmed with my own insecurities, I can't take his on just yet. I'd have to burn through all my fears first. Then I'd have to know that he wasn't making the movie, and then it would have to be officially offered to me. Then I would be the first one to take on all those fears if all of those things would come to pass.

So you wouldn't take it on unless Peter Jackson said it was okay for you to take it on?

Sam Raimi: I'd have to know that he was okay with it. It's really his picture and Bob Shaye's picture. I hate to say that because I don't want to put him in some position where he's supposed to respond to me. I'm not even in a position where I want to ask him that. I guess I should say "No comment."

Spider-Man 3 swings into conventional theaters and IMAX on May 4 from Columbia Pictures.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Peter Jackson to direct!!! No other is acceptable!! The only director I could even have some acceptance for is Guillermo del Toro. But I want PJ to do it! His "Vision" is perfect with mine when it comes to middle-earth. And PJ&#180s team & FX company should atleast be involved with it!

I dont think id even watch it unless PJ and his team make it. I also think that ANY direcot thats offered it (other than PJ) should to bob shaye to kiss there hairy hobbit feet! and refuse to make it. Let bob do it himself!

well untill the whole new line/ jackson feud is done it wont happen and the newline mgm duel rights to the hobbit is only for a limited time..so i dont think its as much jacksons baby as people think if these two companies want the hobbit made guess what ? they will make it reguardless what the fans truley think..its all about the bank..granted they could make it with any director they wanted..quntin tarrentino could be free, and they would say ok we just need to make it befor the rights are gone..sure it could suck(no offenese here to tarintino) but its not about jackson anymore its about the money..it will either get made or it wont....if not by jackson by somebody else.

I have written plenty on this subject, you can check my other comments if you like, but the fact is Raimi cannot and should not do The Hobbit. It is Peter's film and in my opinion thats final. Just because Raimi is a visually interesting director does not make him the guy for the job. If you want to know why I have provided several reasons why just click my name and follow the links. If you are for Raimi doing The Hobbit you may change your mind. Peter for the Hobbit!

My biggest wish is to have Peter come back to direct the Hobbit, but I don't think that is going to happen because of the lawsuit. I read an article in last month's Premiere magazine about it and the odds are not good for Peter to come back. I personally do not want Raimi to direct this movie because I feel it's not for him.

Problem is Peter Jackson and New Line still have this stupid law suit over the first LOTR film to sort out, so i don't know if Pete is even gonna direct The Hobbit

Yeah, but you gotta still feel a little weary. I mean, while Raimi is awesome, Jackson is the guy who created the original films we all love. There is a certain element that I think only he as a director brings to the table.

If Jackson doesn't do it, Raimi would by someone I would trust to do it right.

Raimi is certainly capable of directing The Hobbit, but I still feel as though Jackson could still come back for the film. Like he said, thats his project and it'd be difficult without Jackson and Shaye involved.
