Sam Raimi will produce and may direct The Day of the Triffids remake for Mandate
Mandate won the heated bidding auction over Universal Pictures, which was bidding on behalf of director David Yates. Sam Raimi and his longtime producing partner Robert G. Tapert will join Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Mark Gordon as producers.
We first reported on this project last month, which indicated the movie would utilize 3D technology, although the Deadline story didn't indicate if the movie will still be in 3D or not.
The movie will be a remake of the 1963 classic The Day of the Triffids, which was based on the 1951 novel by John Wyndham. The story revolves around a meteor shower which results in 99.9% of the world population growing blind. The meteors also release these aggressive plants dubbed Triffids, who begin to attack the blind masses.
The site also indicated that the original was one of Sam Raimi's favorite movies and that he wants to direct this new version. We'll be sure to keep you posted with any further details on The Day of the Triffids as soon as we have more information.
The Day of the Triffids was released in 2012.

the more i think about it the more i remember that, despite liking the story a lot, i seem to remember it being like paaaainfully slow, so i retract my previous "mandatory viewing" statement and replace it with "if you can get someone to describe the gist to you, you're gold".

I love Raimi. Yes he is hit or miss but he has a unique style and that is more than i can say for most of the directors in hollywood these days. If he wants Triffids (which i have never seen) then i say let him have triffids.
@theREALsupes I might be the only one who like mars attacks and that was not really a remake...it was based on card collectables.

yes, you should.
it starts out slow but great, i would say the first 2/3 of the movie are great and then it sort of drifts off after that, but still totally worth watching and considering it's a cornerstone in sci-fi history it should be considered mandatory viewing for all movie nerds.
(i am referring to the bbc version, i haven't seen the old 60s version)
