Sony Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to the 2010 action-thriller Salt, with Angelina Jolie expected to reprise her starring role.

The studio has hired Kurt Wimmer, who wrote the original Salt, to write the sequel screenplay. While Angelina Jolie has not officially signed on for the sequel, the actress will likely return if the script comes together in the right way. Back in August, we reported that Angelina Jolie expressed interest in returning for a Salt sequel.

Phillip Noyce directed Salt, although he revealed back in December he would not direct a Salt sequel.

Salt starred Angelina Jolie as a CIA agent who is accused of being a Russian double-agent, which forces her to go on the lam to clear her name. Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and August Diehl also starred in Salt, which grossed over $300 million worldwide.

Salt was released July 23rd, 2010 and stars Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daniel Olbrychski, August Diehl, Daniel Pearce, Hunt Block, Andre Braugher. The film is directed by Phillip Noyce.

yeah, go ahead and make a completely unnescecary sequel. SOME MOVIES ARE NOT MEANT TO HAVE SEQUELS.

...couldn't believe this movie made that much money. I always have a tough time with having chicks be the lead bad-ass in a movie. Call it whatever you want, but it's just something that turns me off from the beginning. I remember reading they wanted Tom Cruise for the role originally, but when they couldn't get him they gave it to Jolie instead.. I thought that was super lame, just like the idea of a possible sequel

Given that the first movie's primary weak spot was its crappy screenplay, this is not good news.

The first movie was dull at first, picked up steam, and then ended abruptly. Hopefully, the sequel can start with the same tension the first ended with.

Great, the first one was pretty good, and as long as they bring Jolie back, which obviously I'm sure they will.

I'd prefer Jolie to push for her Cleopatra movie instead of this... Salt wasn't that great.

David Fincher has been working on Sony projects lately. It would be really awesome if he signed on for this after The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
