Joss Whedon says the S.H.I.E.L.D. series is autonomous to Marvel's The Avengers
We first reported on the potential series last month, although it wasn't immediately clear what the show would focus on. While the report did indicate it would take place in the same world as Marvel's The Avengers, it may not feature the same superhero characters. The show will center solely on, "the activities of the top-secret S.H.I.E.L.D. espionage organization featured in The Avengers."
It was said, though, that Joss Whedon does reserve the right to throw tie-ins from the movies into the show. It still isn't known if Samuel L. Jackson will be featured in any capacity as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Nick Fury.
Joss Whedon is co-writing the pilot script with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, both of whom will serve as showrunners if the pilot is picked up to series. They will executive produce with Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell. Joss Whedon is expected to direct the pilot episode, if he can fit it into his schedule.
The series is moving fast, so it's quite possible that we will see S.H.I.E.L.D. sometime in 2013.

Superman81 "We will have 3 iron mans, 2 Thor, 2 CA before we have anything different." Almost as bad as 8 Batman Movies, 7 Superman movies, a few dozen iterations of live action and animated series. How about Superman has had a Lex Luthor fetish for 50 years and they're still doing that relationship every other week. At any rate this sounds different to me. It's not going to have The Avengers in it. SHIELD does have many other super agents that they could throw in. A show about a spy organization that also has the occasional superhero agent thrown in... How is that the same old boring TV?

I have no doubt he can make a show good with his past work, but in general, it doesn't seem needed but what the hell

@rudy I am sure that is what he will do along with Scarlett and Cobie... I am sure this is going to be really good!

@dan1 I have hope that this show will be good, even with out all the main cast of the Avengers being in it. Maybe there will be some cameo apppearances of the cast of the Avengers movie, that show up briefly on the show?

I wonder if Jeremy Renner would also make a cameo along with black widow in the pilot episode and and a few others.

Absolutely, @dan1. There's just no justice for the genius that he is, after all that he's accomplished. Hell, there are new talents out htere who have been around for far less time with less accomplishments under their belt that go more "benefit of the doubt" than most give Whedon. It's insanity.
I'd be willing to be that if he ever did a Marvel "Runaways" project for television, it'd be an absolute blast AND a powerhouse. He just has that talent with him, and like you, I'll be seeing this thing regardless of popular opinion. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled, which it shouldn't seeing as how "Fux" isn't involved.

As long as Samuel L Jackson is in it, i'm on board.

@mcleve02 I agree, he doesn't necessarily have to be there in person all the time, but I think he has to be there at least in cameos.

@narrator Exactly. Whedon seems to never earn people's faith. Yeah, Dollhouse was a flop pretty much, but the rest of his body of work is superb. He could have made the show about anything/anyone in the MCU, and make it extremely entertaining. But whatever. I know I'm gonna enjoy the hell out of it.

Also, why are people missing the point!? There shouldn't be focus on any superhero recruiting. S.H.I.E.L.D. is a HUGE peacekeeping organization made almost entirely of regular humans. Stop trying to make this a televised Avengers show or anything related, because it's not. I'm expecting espionage, gadgets, politics, etc. Superpowers will likely appear somewhere in the show, but it should by no means be a focus for the series.

This is what I wanted to hear. Now, bring on the Whedon alumni for the cast! Nathan Fillion (though Castle is in the way), Amy Acker, Summer Glau, Alan Tudyk, etc.

I agree bring in Smulders and the should focus to recruit new superheroes to be on the team

Can we, at the very least, have Smulders in it? Pretty please, Whedon?

Bring it. Doubters will doubt, but I have faith in Whedon, as always.

@superman81 I think you'll start to see that in Phase 3. I have a feeling that it'll be longer than 3 years between 'The Avengers 2' and a supposed 'Avengers 3'. I think they'll spend that time developing new characters in addition to giving us more of the established characters.

Marvel is going to burn people out, they are constantly trying to flood the market. We don't need Marvel movies every year and we don't need a tv show about Shield. How many actual people will watch a show about Shield every week? Maybe fans but not the majority market. Marvel needs to dial it back some, making movies is fine but how bout they focus on other characters besides the avengers. We will have 3 iron mans, 2 Thor, 2 CA before we have anything different.

Your headline doesn't match your content. "Will not" and "may not" are two distinctively different things. As for Whedon's comments, it sounded like he was saying that the show won't be bound strictly to the story they are planning for 'The Avengers 2' but doesn't rule out possibly featuring the superhero characters in guest spots. I think trying to get the film stars to guest on the show is probably the only real stumbling block in all of this.

Any way I can't say I'm really excited about this.

as far as Samuel L. Jackson is concerned, he does not need to be there all the time, cameo him in or do voice stuff where they call over the phone to him... something! I would say not to recast Nick Fury though! This sounds like this is really moving in the right direction!

ok... see DC, this is why Marvel is winning the fight... they are smart about how they do things... I can see how this may be able to work

I think this is for the better. I think in this capacity it would be better to see SHIELDs agents doing what they do on a daily basis. Also, not every episode has to deal with the end of the world or some orginization trying to take over the world. There is a lot of room for good story telling here.
