Warner Bros. has hired commercial director Nic Mathieu to helm a live action adaptation of the animated sci-fi series Robotech. No casting details have been released.

A live-action Robotech has been in the works for quite a long time. When we last heard about the project, Sylvain White, best known for Stomp the Yard and the forgotten comic book adaptation The Losers, was in the running to direct. He never officially signed onto the project.

The story is set in a future where humans have developed massive robots from a downed alien spacecraft on a South Pacific isle. Humanity is forced to battle waves of unrelenting invaders, while the fate of the planet has been put into the hands of two young pilots.

Robotech was originally an anime series produced by Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Productions. Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Tobey Maguire, Matthew Plouffe and Tory Tunnell are producing the project.

Robotech comes to theaters in 2016.

(facepalm) Why hire a f*cking commercial director! Hire a director that knows about the source material, not some guy that can make stylish ads. F*cking baboons!

As long as they stick to the Macross saga and forget about the rest of the series, would make a good movie.

@dan1 One series of 26 episodes, although because of the sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway, the last two episodes were dramatically altered. With that said, watch the show, then the film End Of Evangelion, which is purportedly to be what would have been included in the final eps. The films @bawnian-dexeus is referring to as a new set is them is a slight reimagining. I wrote a review of the second one a while back.

@dan1 26 eps with 2 movies plus a set of new films continuing or reviving the series. Or so I've read

@ejk1 Which series? Anime confuses me, since there are multiple series of some shows.

@ejk1 It's not. But my brother and a friend of mine are big anime fans. So it's impossible for me to not know a little bit.

That plot sounds kinda similar to Pacific Rim, which is similar to Evangelion. Eh.

Glad to know this project is still afloat. A lot of potential here if its handled right.
