RoboCop Loses Hugh Laurie as Its Villain

Hugh Laurie drops out of RoboCop

Back in June, we reported that House star Hugh Laurie was in talks to star in RoboCop as the villainous OmniCorp CEO. Today, we have word from Variety reporter Jeff Sneider that talks have broken down, and that he will not play the villain. Here's what he had to say on his Twitter page.

MGM RUMOR #1: While he was never officially confirmed, sources telling Variety that HUGH LAURIE has ended talks to play villain in ROBOCOP.

Production is scheduled to start very soon in Toronto, so it seems MGM will have to move fast to find a new villain. Joel Kinnaman stars as Alex Murphy, the Detroit cop who is resurrected as the title character. Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, and Jackie Earle Haley are also starring.

RoboCop comes to theaters February 7th, 2014 and stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Keaton, Jay Baruchel, Michael K. Williams. The film is directed by José Padilha.

I prefer Keaton anyway. We've "known" him longer and he's about the age that Ronnie Cox was when he did Robocop. And Ronnie Cox used to play good guys too, like Keaton, so I think it's a nice fit. "Would've" liked to see Christopher Walken or Max Von Sydow play "The Old Man".
