Robert Rodriguez and Rose McGowan Join for Red Sonja
"I was surprised when Rose brought me a script of Red Sonja that she liked," Rodriguez says from his home base of Austin, where he is shooting Shorts, a family film with James Spader and Jon Cryer. "I found it very entertaining. Sonja was strong, smart, cunning - just about everything she'd have to be to survive."
The story will take its cues from the comic books as well as works by pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, father of the original Sonja (then spelled Sonya) and "Conan the Barbarian" (also undergoing a movie revival).
"Howard's goal was always, first and foremost, to spin a good yarn and to entertain," says Rodriguez, who is hoping his Red Sonja turns into a franchise. "That's our goal."
Production will begin in October.

Isn't mcgowan the girl w/ the gun for a leg in grindhouse? If she is, then that's just a f*cked up casting choice that robert only chose cuz it's his "flame." I didn't even know there was a movie already. I'm only familiar with the comic, and in the comic, she's big-busted, big-assed, and red haired...not mcgowan

Hmmm Rose McGowan? Not to sure about her playing THIS particular role. I just watched Wanted and Angelina Jolie would have been a better choice for the part. She's hot and can play badass pretty freakin good.

The original was greaat, the lil karate emperor and his fat nodyguard with the bone club, haha classic!
I do think rose got the role cause she is shacked up with Robert, but oh well, Im not really sure she is strong enough for the role, but I like the sword and sorcery movies. I played a sh*t load of D&D when I was younger so Im there. Shgould be nice and action packed with Rodriguez at the helm.

No!!!! He already has her casted in the lead role of his Barbarella remake. What the hell is wrong with him?! Of course, fans are going to compare her to Bridgette Nielson. She's too soft for the part. She's going to ruin it.

Sounds good, but now you have to wonder if Rodriguez put McGowan in the lead role because they're together, or because she might be good for the role? He's stuck now, because he can't recast her, or that'll be an awkward conversation.
