Rob Marshall Confirmed to Direct Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

This summer we reported that director Rob Marshall was in line to direct the latest adventures of Jack Sparrow, and now it has been confirmed. An Ain't It Cool News reader sent in a review of Rob Marshall's latest film Nine, and at the Q&A session afterwards, Marshall confirmed he will be directing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here's an excerpt from the article.

When asked about his next project (by Nora Ephron, who hosted the Q&A), he replied 'y'know, it's something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like 'why not?'... I'm doing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. That's right-- Rob Marshall is directing the next installment of the 'Pirates' franchise. The only additional thing he mentioned about it was that he had a wonderful meeting with Johnny a little while ago and that they're both excited to work together.

While this news hasn't been officially confirmed by Disney, this appears to be the first time that Marshall had publicly spoken about his involvement on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any new updates on this film as soon as we have more information.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released May 20th, 2011 and stars Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally, Sam Claflin, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Stephen Graham. The film is directed by Rob Marshall.

I agree Todd. I'm done with all of the Fantasy crap. I liked the cursed/skeleton crew, because that fit in with the ride perfectly. But with all of those sea creature crewmen in "Dead Man's Chest", I lost a bit of interest. The biggest thing that everybody made a big deal about was that wheel sword fight scene. It's really sad, when that's the best thing that can be hyped about, in an action movie of that scale.

Like Todd says, we need a good simple pirate movie, sans epic overtone, with a lot of rum-induced Jack Sparrow high jinks.

It would be interesting to see what would happen if Sparrow and Barbosa would just bury the hatchet. I mean the, "Tag you're it" thing is getting old. Depp and Rush play well off of each other and would make a great comedy team as fellow crewmen and business partners, if Disney decides to send future installments down the pike that is.

I just hope we get the same feel with Marshal, that we had in Curse of the Black Pearl, with Verbinski at the helm. You know, every time they change a director, the feeling is just NOT the same.

But, this might be a good thing. Verbinski seemed to lose his way with "At Worlds End". There was some pretty weird stuff in that. People can say whatever they want about "Worlds End" being just as good as the others, but I'm sure everyone will agree, that it was just not up to par.

And it's at a crucial point in the franchise to take a chance on a director change, because Depp and Rush are really alone in this, unless all of the original cast is coming back. All except Bloom, Knightly, Price and Jack Davenport that is.

I hope they bring the undead monkey back as a send up and to reinforce continuity. I mean, he's still on board the Black Pearl, right? I'm sure Sparrow has a ball of lead with the monkey's name on it. Oh wait, the monkey's name is Jack too!

I think my post might be too long. Only one out of seven will read it. Awe.....boo, hoo.

It's only a four film arc, unless Disney wants to keep it going. Why can't we get a simple Pirate adventure without the world epic thing?
    That's what puts me off.
We're suppose to meet Jack's brother.

Can't tell how this is gonna be yet. I thought Sparrow got exceedingly strange and unnecessary towards the end of "At World's End." Hopefully there's more of a Geoffery Rush focus and possibly a Bill Nighy reprise.

I don't think Marshall has the right since of scale to do a movie like this. But then again, I didn't know Verbinski had it either up until he did the first Pirates.
