Ridley Scott Confirmed to Direct Blade Runner Sequel

Ridley Scott confirmed to direct Blade Runner sequel
Back in August, we reported that Ridley Scott will direct a follow-up to his 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner, although it wasn't known if it will be a prequel or sequel. The filmmaker has now confirmed he will in fact be at the helm of the next Blade Runner, and that it is a sequel.

Ridley Scott revealed he is close to finding a writer to help him with the screenplay. Here's what he had to say below.

"I think I'm close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver. We're quite a long way in, actually."

Ridley Scott also said that the sequel will not feature members of the Blade Runner cast, including Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard. Back in March, we reported that Warner Bros. is lining up both prequels and sequels to Blade Runner.

Blade Runner was released June 25th, 1982 and stars Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, M. Emmet Walsh, Daryl Hannah, William Sanderson, Brion James. The film is directed by Ridley Scott.

By the way, have you noticed how all the (what I consider to be) the best director working today are all returning to either Sci-Fi or Fantasy films......or sci-fi/fantasy films.

Ridley Scott with Prometheus, Blade Runner sequel and possibly The Forever War.

Steven Spielberg with Robopocalypse and eventually the "currently pending" Interstellar.

Peter Jackson with The Hobbit Part I & Part II

Bryan Singer with Jack the Giant Killer & Battlestar Galactica...and possibly X-Men 4 & 5

Christopher Nolan with The Dark Knight Rises

J.J. Abrams with Star Trek 2 & second untitled mystery sci-fi film

Guillermo Del Toro with Pacific Rim

David Fincher with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Joseph Kosinski with Oblivion (or Horizons)

Zack Snyder with The Man of Steel

James Cameron with Avatar 2 & 3 (not sure if that's all that great, though, to be honest)

    Neill Blomkamp with Elysium

Matt Reeves with The Twilight Zone

The Wachowski Brothers with Jupiter Ascending

    Alfonso Cuaron with Gravity

The List goes on.....but, for once, it feels like everyone is doing projects that they are perfect for!!

@Number1Wolverine - I know, right? Technically, in this particular instance, my dreams already have come true because if I ever wanted ANYONE to return to the world of Blade Runner, it was Ridley Scott.....which is obviously happening now with the sequel.
However, to have Nolan direct a prequel would be the best icing on the cake.....EVER.
Even if Nolan doesn't do the prequel (and there's a good possibility he will because the studios/rights owners said they were interested in Nolan for one of the two films) I still want to see Nolan tackle a full-out Sci-Fi film. Something dealing with space, aliens, other planets, whatever.

With Ridley Scott officially back on a sci-fi kick, I'm really hoping he utilizes his time and, after Blade Runner, finally gets around to making The Forever War. I've been waiting for that film for SO LONG.....but I'm sure it would be worth the wait.

@felipe-11 you are right, you might be the only person in the world who thinks The Lost World was better than JP, and that's a good thing lol

@skywise Yep, I definitely agree with on all that.

@k-man I'm guessing we'll get a trailer by christmas, I can't wait! I'm looking forward to Prometheus even more than TDKR!

@felipe-11 I see where your coming from and the action was a bit better in the 2nd JP but obviously the first paved the way in the FX department. I mean they were really doing stuff that was unheard of at the time. IMO the first one has a little more heart and that is what wins me over. But damn JP2 has some kick @ss action sequences!

Also, if Ridley is doing the sequel......I wonder who is doing the prequel? I would like to see Nolan tackle that!

Ridley is on one very cool streak right now. He is making sequels and prequels to some of his best movies, movie which literally changed how films were made from that point on........therefore, this is a big deal. I cant friggin wait to see how his vision of the Blade Runner universe will be expanded with current technology!!! This is going to be simply amazing.

Give us a Prometheus trailer already!!

@skywise I might be the only person in the world who actually thinks JP2 was a bit better than the first one, or as good. JP1 was a complete breakthrough in VFX I'll give you that, but story-wise there's not that much going on (in either film) but the 2nd at least has better action, IMO. Or maybe I'm just not too crazy over the JP franchise :P

Ridley, your comment translates to... I cannot come up with anything new, so I return to the old! Where's the creativity?!

I say that only because some jackass will complain sooner or later, and I can't have someone upstage me. Really, I am writhing in fanboy ecstasy.

That's good that it won't be a bunch of old guys trying to pretend they're still young by picking up where they left off. Not to mention Ridley Scott's extensive involvement in the project.

@incmob I dont mean to be argumentative but Scott is pretty much revered as a sci fi film maker....and visionary film maker in general. As bizzare as Legend was it was something so unique at a time when fantasy was basicaly laughable. IMO he gets credit where credit is due but then again, i love the guy so i might be a bit biased.

THANK THE GODS!!!! awesome that scott is finally going back to what he does best! as much as people believe lucas and spielberg paved the way for sci fi and filmakers, i think scott influenced more than he is given credit for and it is nice to see him not only return to alien but now bladerunner... F*CK YES!

@felipe-11 you are absolutly right. But even guys who originated the first might not work. I have high hopes but look back at say, Jurassic Park. Spielberg created an awesome movie that to this day is unforgetable but when he approached the sequel it was highly disapointing. I am not saying it wont be great but i am trying to keep a realistic attitude. I always say: Expect nothing and you will be nopt be disapointed.

Having said that, i am very very excited to see what comes of all this.

Scott's words back in August could roughly be translated into, "I'm not doing this because they aren't offering me enough money." Well, they must have ponied up since he's on board now. I'm happy about this development, because it would have seemed wrong for someone else to take this project.

I'm beyond excited for this, this man is the sci-fi master!

@ChiRep-1 I'm almost through watching all of Scott's films, and up till now all of them have been superb! Check out 'Black Rain' if you haven't already!

@skywise I haven't seen The Thing yet, but from what I hear it was a typical horror remake from some newbie director, this a sequel to Ridley's own film and the guy never disappoints!

Wow! I figured this would happen since he has been talking about it. And the Alien prequel thing thats coming along. I am very interested to find out more details. The only problem here is that expectations will be way to high. Like The Thing, I have a feeling that it will disapoint. Scott set the bar soooo freakin high early on in his career. Still, i am all for this!
