Resident Evil: Extinction Tops DVD Charts

Two New Year's Day releases, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Resident Evil: Extinction and Lionsgate's War, topped the national DVD sales and rental charts, respectively, for the week ending Jan. 6.

Resident Evil: Extinction came out on top on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, riding on its $50.7 million theatrical record. War came in at No. 2 but topped Home Media Magazine's video rental chart with estimated rental earnings of $11.8 million, or more than half its $22.5 million boxoffice take. Resident Evil generated an estimated $8.3 million in rental stores for a fifth-place bow.

A third newcomer, New Line's Shoot 'Em Up, debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart, right behind Warner's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which jumped a notch the first week of the new year and its fourth week in release. Shoot 'Em Up, which made just $12.8 million, debuted at No. 8 on the rental chart, but its estimated rental earnings of $7.7 million still amount to 60% of its theatrical gross.

The previous week's top seller, 20th Century Fox's The Simpsons: The Movie, slipped to No. 8 in its third week in stores. Universal Studios' The Kingdom and New Line's Rush Hour 3 were released just before and after Christmas and finished at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. On the rental chart, Rush Hour 3 came in at No. 2 with $11.1 million in revenue, while The Kingdom was No. 3 with $10.5 million.

"Shoot 'Em Up" rocked! I saw it in theaters, & then I bought a copy of the film the day it hit store shelves! Just like the film "Running Scared", "Shoot 'Em Up" is "NOT" for everyone! All I have to say if you see "Shoot 'Em Up" you have to have an open mind!
"Shoot 'Em Up" is crazy, insane, Over-the-Top fun!
Clive Owen is 1 hell of an actor!

Actually...Resident Evil 3 was better than I expected, Shoot 'Em Up was not something I should have taken the wife to see, Harry Potter was Harry Potter, The Simpsons went from 30 minutes to 90 but was still good, and Rush Hour 3...watch the first one 3 times and you've seen it all.

Yeah, the "ONLY" reason "Resident Evil: Extinction" topped the national DVD sales and rental charts was nobody saw it in theater!!!

"War" was forgettable! The only reason I saw it in theater was Jason Statham!!! & Jason Statham couldn't even save the film!

I loved "Shoot 'Em Up" I saw that in theater! I lvoe Clive Owen!! I bought a copy of it the day it came out! Very over the top fun movie!!

"The Kingdom" was a damn good film! It was filmed right here in Phoenix, Arizona!! "The Kingdom" was so under-rated!

The only reason I rented (skipped it in theaters) "Rush Hour 3" was that Academy Award-winning film director Roman Polanski co-stars as a French police offer!
