Resident Evil: Begins Gets Official Title, Will Be a Reboot

Sony's Screen Gems division has decided on an official title for their fifth Resident Evil installment. Called Resident Evil: Begins, this latest chapter in the long-running franchise will be a reboot that takes the series back to the horror roots of the original video game upon which it is based.

Resident Evil: Begins will be set in 1998, before the events of the first film took place. Series star Milla Jovovich will once again portray the character Alice, and we will see her before she became the tough action hero we know today. Sienna Guillory will be reprising her role as Jill Valentine, and will actually take the lead. Instead of the main push of the story being placed on Alice, Valentine will be at the center of a major viral outbreak caused by Umbrella. There is no word yet if CGI will be used to de-age either actor.

There is also a possibility that a new video game will arrive based on Resident Evil: Begins, which offers players the chance to be either Alice or Valentine, with the goal of slowing down the viral outbreak.

Resident Evil: Begins will be in 3D.

Resident Evil: Retribution comes to theaters September 14th, 2012 and stars Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Boris Kodjoe, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, Shawn Roberts, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand. The film is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.

    @pjwolsker If it's a reboot, does it take place before the events of the first film? If its a reboot, it wouldn't be in canon with the other films and would therefore be the first film in an Entirely new series.

    A:...Maybe he doesnt want any1 rebooting sumthing that never really started! So he wants to make1 b4 sum1 else steals his ideas, lol B... he finally played resident evil on ps3 and realized how bad he messed up the franchise by not playing the game 1st, or atleast he prob only played level1, then turned it off to watch american idol, lol. then theres C. he never really had any ideas for a part5, so he figired, i'll start over.

    @jptheredskull So basically what you're saying is, it's like that movie Trick R, Treat and Vantage Point where at the beginning it's showing one person point of view then it rewinds and shows the other persons point of view of everything they went through? But in this case a sequel/Prequel about everything that Jill Valentine went through?

    It's not actually a Reboot. It's a retelling of the series as it was but from the point of view of Jill Valentine.

    Ok Listen Up I've Been a Fan Of The Resident Evil Films Since The First one that came out back in 2002 to 2010's fourth film afterlife which ends with a huge massive cliffhanger hundreds of umbrella ships jill valentine with the red device on her chest was the best part i was looking forward too to c her being the villion and alice fighting her off but when i heard what the plot for resident evil begins i thought this has to be a f****ing joke right the plot will be set in 1998 before the first film's events absoloutl awfull idea who want's to know what happend before first film know 1 cares at all and 2. jill valentine in the centre of the outbreak caused by umbrella im taking that it mean's when racoon city infection happens we've already seen that from apocalypse once again who cares 3. A REBOOT it;s not a reboot Listen i woudn't mind although i would be a bit sad even if thery just rebooted and made it like the games instead of going back to first film all i have to say now is that if they make this resident evil film you've just a lost a loyal no-1 fan since 2002 so stuff that in 3.d and smoke it

    I think that is going to be a great movie. I always wanted to see Jill Valentine as a main character. Just wish they make it as Jill and Chris would be partners, investigating against Umbrella. Just Alice and Jill stories cannot be connected in any way because they do not even know each other in Resident Evil Apocalypse.

Anderson screwed up the first time around and he did ok on #2 then ruined it with #3&#4 with a game like resident evil you dont go off and do your own thing you stay true to the damn story plus adding fictional characters is just stupid Milla Jovovich could have been one of the other characters from the main story line like Claire ......................

    Please no more Paul W.S Anderson's Resident Evil movies, I like the first one bu then the rest didn't stay true to the game so just remake it with a new cast and a new great director like Geroge A. Romero or Zack Synder and stay true to the game by making the movie been based in the manison like the first gam,e.

That could also be taken as an insult......why would they need CGI?..they look fine, just use the good, old-fashion makeup.....or what? would they really need it???.......tell The Mime, because he thinks they're still hot enough to portray young version of themselves.....

    A Prequel means the movie takes place before the first one, yeah, up to the point where the first film begins then they cut it because we already know what's gonna happen next, if this was a Prequel then it wouldn't even be called Resident Evil because there wouldn't be no point in watching an undead movie without seeing any undead, this one is going to start the outbreak over and continue from there, so there for it's a f*cking Reboot

    It is Prequel because it talks about what happened before Resident Evil 1
    If Milla is in it...That is not a surprise..Because even in X-Men prequel.....Hugh was part of X-Men origin of Wolvrine. If it was a REBOOT that Milla won't be part of it.
    Because in Reboot Original cast is tend to lose their roles Just like SpiderMan.
    Many of here,,,,,just don't understand...One simple thing it is a PREQUEL
