Red State was released September 25th, 2011 and stars Melissa Leo, John Goodman, Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner, Stephen Root, Nicholas Braun, Kevin Pollak, Anna Gunn. The film is directed by Kevin Smith.

@joekerr2e the expression "fear god" does not mean to be afraid from god. but to know that god has power and is the creator of this world. if i were to "fear god" i wouldn't PICK to be christian. i would then have to be christian cz i 'fear' god's punishment. both ways this expression comes out of every christian's mouth and it should.
oh and i assure you, Fred Phelps, is the farthest thing from a true christian. what he fights for is not christianity. God says "love your enemies". God removes the word Hate from his slogan. Fred is spreading hate against everyone. Love is god's word.
As for the poster. it is a pretty cool poster.. and i understand what everyone is saying the poster is most definitely misleading to understand God as something to fear. hope it turns out good.

because most people who take their phony bologna religion entirely too seriously and think people who don't are sc*m tend to vote republican.
it's true, phelps is a dem but so what, it's not like it's a biopic he was just the inspiration for the antagonist.

Why is the film called Red State if it's based on Fred Phelps who is a Democrat?

@Rufio ... I can't say what Smith was thinking when he put the "Fear God" on the poster, but my guess is it's exactly what Phelps says. God will punish all. God punishes the troops for war. God punishes homosexuals. God punishes everything that he doesn't like and all those who don't follow them. So even though I'd have a problem if this isn't what Smith means... I personally believe that's exactly why he put it there. It sounds like something that would roll out of Phelps mouth.

what, you guys never heard the expression "god fearing"?
it is a term that means one is a christian, so ergo to say "fear god" is to say "be a god-fearing person" which is to say "be a christian".
    trust me it makes sense.

    anyway, great poster.

    sigh...
the poster's catch phrase "fear God" is problematic for me. if this is about extreme religious groups shouldn't it be "fear Fred Phelphs" or "fear extremists"?
tired of subjective fanaticism. now-a-days anyone who isn't killing people or blowing stuff up, but takes their faith seriously is lumped into extremist groups.

@Emmytt ... This won't be another religious film and hopefully Kevin Smith delivers a suspensful drama on this one. I'm from Kansas and fulltime military, so I'm looking forward to someone shedding light on this @$$hole.

@Emmytt Sort of... I mean, it makes fun of an extreme religious group (or at least will paint them in the insane light they should be painted in).
