Producer Tripp Vinson discusses the decision to make the villains hail from North Korea
The digital altering of Red Dawn is ripe for discussion and debate. Today, Red Dawn producer Tripp Vinson has issued a statement via email addressing this very concern, saying that the decision to make the villains hail from North Korea is only going to make the thriller scarier and timelier. And perhaps even stronger.
Here is what Tripp Vinson had to say.
"I know there is a lot of interest and questions as to the changes announced regarding Red Dawn.
This movie has been rebooted because the filmmakers all love the original movie. The experience of seeing Red Dawn as a young boy in the middle of a Cold War, was life changing for me and a generation. I assure you that everyone involved with the reboot is keenly aware of the responsibility of delivering a movie that can stand eye to eye with the original.
The changes made to Red Dawn in the last few weeks were made in consultation with military think tanks and people that specialize in game theory. Really smart people that spend their days constructing doomsday scenarios for our military and government. The type of people that know the limitations of the North Korean military. The type of people that can project a series of events that could lead to some very scary things happening to our Country. I can assure you, we listened well to those people, especially with regards to the capability of the North Korean military.
Red Dawn isn't for everyone. So, if you are interested in seeing a movie filled with preachy political discussions - Red Dawn ain't for you. If you love movies in which Americans are the bad guys - Red Dawn ain't for you. If you get emotional watching daytime television - Red Dawn ain't for you. If you're a vegetarian - Red Dawn probably ain't for you.
But! If you like meat with your potatoes, muscle cars that roar, tanks, guns and things blowing the fuck up by American's kicking some Commie ass - then we have something special coming your way.
WOLVERINES!
Tripp Vinson"

Well thanks Tripp Vinson. After reading your letter I'll never see this film, or any film you produce in the future.
There is no tactical, logistical, remotely possible way North Korea even has the sheer man power within their army to overtake California... China does for sure.
Speaking of China, The "think tanks" Vinson is talking about told him China wasn't acceptable, not that N.Korea was a better choice. He's pretty much telling all of us the govt talked to him and he's a big pu.ss.y. Keep this article in mind whenever you see an MGM production.

it would be scarrier and stronger if NK was a major threat to the united states but compared to China they are like the tiny kid on the block. I was excited about this film but now i am haivng doubts. It just does not seem realistic....no matter how valid it may be.

You're missing my point. Even back then it would be impossible for an army to invade the US. Yes, the weapon advancements I totally agree with you on but like I said before, back then an invasion still couldn't have happened. Just as implausible now as it was back then so I don't know why it bothers you now.

I'm a big fan of the original. Plus, this only works when the Chinese or North Korea attack us. If it were vice versa, it would be a plane flying overhead and a nuke dropping, role credits... cause we can't ground war either of these. I don't really dig the story too much now since China and/or North Korea can't even get into ANY airspace without being detected, let alone over the US. @ejk1 ... The tech is way better, but I just wish they would f#$king spend some more money on the MREs... they still taste like $hit!

@messenger What's the difference between then and now? Smart technologies. Weapon Advancement. What, do you think all things military have stayed the same over the last twenty-five to thirty years?

Screw it, I'll watch this. I just hope that it's fun and entertaining.
@ejk1
Even when the original came out the premise was completely illogical and implausible it could never happen. What's the difference between then and now. But I don't see why they have to change the antagonist to NK cause hell, with the money we owe China, it wouldn't surprise if they did invade us.

Idiotic produceing.... This could be a good movie, even though I am not big on remakes. But to change the enemy from one to another this far past it being filmed is just stupid....

This whole thing makes no sense. I mean, with all the technological advancements, An invasion force would be repelled fairly quickly. Red Dawn in the 80's was fun, and interesting. Red Dawn in the 2010's? Illogical, implausible, and in my opinion, stupid. For the record, I think this guy Tripp is a douchebag.
