RealD Accounts for Over Half of Avatar's Opening Weekend Grosses

In the largest theatrical 3D film release to date, RealD announced today that theaters equipped with RealD's 3D cinema technology brought in nearly $40 million of the total domestic box office generated by 20th Century Fox's Avatar, which debuted at #1 during its opening weekend, earning more than $242.5 million worldwide. The box office generated in theaters with RealD technology accounted for over 50% of the total weekend's receipts.

"We congratulate our colleagues at 20th Century Fox on the tremendously successful release and spectacular campaign for Avatar," said Michael V. Lewis, Chairman and CEO of RealD. "This landmark weekend with over half of the box office coming from RealD-equipped theaters demonstrates that audiences have both discovered and are becoming loyal fans of RealD's new generation of 3D."

RealD counts among its partners 19 of the world's top 20 exhibitors with an industry-leading 9,500 screens under contract and 4,800 screens installed in 48 countries with 300 exhibition partners.

I cant help but think that the only reason "3D" makes any money is because it is often the only option available when wanting to see a popular movie lately. Not because people are actually drawn to seeing films in "3D". I personally hate it and was glad my theater offered AVATAR in 2D. Beautiful film... and i didnt have to pay the extra $3 plus dollars for a format that hurts my head and that i cant even keep the glasses to use for the next "3D" movie. It made me happy to not pay for a scam.
